Do something nice for your furry bat friends today, April 17th. Maybe a nice fried cricket lunch. Tasty and crunchy at the same time.
Bats are the only mammals capable of true flight. With extremely elongated fingers and a wing membrane stretched between the fingers. All bats' bodies are covered with fur. Almost 1,000 bat species can be found worldwide. In fact, bats make up a quarter of all mammal species on earth! [1]
There are a lot of different kinds of bats -- from the tiny bumblebee bat (which is the size of a jellybean and weighs less than a penny) to the huge Bismarck flying fox (with a wingspan as long as an average man).[2] The larger bats are mainly fruit eaters and are a major spreader of seeds. Some smaller bats eat insects, others eat nectar. Nectar eaters provide major pollination for certain plants.
A medium insect eating bat can eat up to 1,200 mosquitoes in an hour, and often consume their body weight in insects every night. [3]
The world’s largest bat is the "flying fox" that lives on islands in the South Pacific. It has a wingspan of up six feet. It is a fruit eater and lives in tropical jungles.
Many species of bats are endangered. To help bats, some folks put up bat houses. There are many plans on the Internet for do-it-yourself bat houses. All bat houses need entrances at the bottom, very narrow interiors, rough surfaces for clinging, and caulking to keep the bat house warm.
