I had never seen a walkingstick until I did my field course this past summer. My friend Billie is tugging on its abdomen to spread it out a bit, and it turned out to be in quite a comical pose,
They're referred to as "phasmids" coming from the Greek word for "ghost", because well, they're very ard to see XD. The camouflage is amazing. My favourite part is how its legs look EXACTLY like pine needles.
FUN FACT: Walkingsticks hold the world record for longest sex session. These guys will remain in copula for a few days before the male buggers off. That's just the temperate ones though. They're nothing compared to the tropical walkingsticks, which will remain in copula for up to SEVENTY-NINE DAYS!
...goddamn, eh?
The reason for this is because the walkingstick penis is shaped kinda like a scoop, so when he puts his penis in, it scoops out the sperm of any previous mates the female might've had. The male stays in her for such a long time to make sure another male doesn't come along and scoop out his sperm.
