Endless Realms player class - Shrine Keeper
Player class artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
This one took me a little while, if only because we weren't sure at first of her overall direction and feel. In the end, though, we arrived at something I think sufficiently conveys the class character: shrine keepers are a fighter-caster class, kind of a cross between a monk and a shaman, who have a symbiotic relationship with the spirits of the world.
They ensure the health and balance of local spirits, psuedo-deities bound to particular places and concepts, and in turn can draw upon their power to fight and channel magic. Their weapons serve in both traditional combat roles, as well as tools with which they interact with and channel the spirits around them: inspired by shakujos and other Buddhist/Shinto trappings, they bear 6 rings bound by a 7th, representing the six major cosmic forces bound and balanced by Astral magic, and often have bells, charms, prayer beads or magical lanterns affixed to them, guiding spirits to them, who in turn, guide the shrine keeper in life and combat.
I was originally given a more traditional caster direction, drawing more from Japanese shrine maidens and shinto priests as inspiration, but as the team felt it didn't properly convey their martial abilities, she was entirely redone with more a more monk/wushu feel.

The image you've done for this is amazing. Although since I liked my ranged combat I'd be throwing that spear around xD
Question though that I don't know if you can answer. I can see this being a great NPC class because you can keep them located in specific areas and help support the local spirits. But for a player character since you are moving around from place to place can you still channel the different spirits since you aren't familiar with them. Since certain spirits are bound to different areas you won't always have them to help you. So does that intern mean you have to make friends with the local spirits first or do you know how that's going to work.

Thank you very much :)
What if you could use the weapon from range? ie. stand behind your front-line fighters and jab through with your spear? But yes, I imagine you could happily build a ranged shrine keeper if you so desired :)
I'm not really sure I know the answer to that. I think shrine keepers are generally able to work with any/all spirits they come in contact with, like a natural "spirit whisperer" as it were. There's another class that uses spirit magic, being a shaman, who work more like wizards - they must regularly commune with/perform rituals for spirits in order to have access to their powers, but they can only do so with one spirit at a time (my husband was thinking it'd make them a neat pet/familiar/summoning class, but I don't think the dev team is taking shaman in that direction).
So basically, I think shamans/shrine keepers might be a little like wizards/sorcerers - the former need to specifically study and choose their powers specifically, while the latter have ready access to powers naturally. I'm not sure what other class-balancing abilities/features might be involved. Sorry! Best I can do ;)
