His name is Checkers. He is an elusive beast living in the deepest regions of the sea, surfacing to challenge trade ships to a game of checkers. Floating in the middle of the ocean, he lifts the ship out of the sea, and dangles his huge angler like eye over the ship, looming over the crew as he examines the checker board, making his move via a crew mate. He was a very delightful beast, enjoying the banter and songs of the sea men (yes I said it, sea men). He shared jokes and stories of other ships he had competed against. But alas, no one has survived Checkers the Sea Monster, either losing and becoming his meal, or winning and becoming stranded in the middle of the sea with a wrecked ship and nothing more.

Yes, he loved to play checkers.
