Once found on the Mascarene Island of Mauritius, the Mauritius Blue Pigeon is called ‘The Dutch One’ in one of its first descriptions as it’s colours resemble that of the Dutch flag. Extinct, and probably was always rare, there are only two known life drawings of the pigeon as well as only three stuffed specimens. The males were described as ‘infinitely more handsome’ than females and had a mane of feathers upon its head.
