Here's a visual reference to the different sections of my comic's city Libertatia. Each one is color-coded and explained in detail below:
"The Wharf" - Even though space ships long replaced ocean-going vessels, the city's bay is still a much more prefered landing to the city's streets. The wharf closer to the industrial sections is more of a seaport and gets more comercial the closer downtown it gets. The wharf in this area has covered shopping areas full of small businesses, bars, and live entertainment. Each building and shopping center polices it's own parking, for the simple fact that stolen ships deter from their business.
"Downtown" - The most successful of the pirate bands tend to do anything to show themselves off and diversify their means of generating wealth - so prime real-estate and flashy skyscrapers are not out of the question. Skyscrapers in this city opperate similar to San Gimignano's - the bigger the tower the bigger the ego! The tallest is one of the city's most recognized landmarks, mainly for it's gigantic penthouse and it's "ploitkynigos" statue on it's spire.
"Beachfront" This Tel Aviv-inspired area holds a lot of sandy Bauhaus-design townhouses and beach houses inhabited by the city's upperclass. The beach is beautiful and mostly unspoiled like the rest of the planet, and is popular for it's "clothing-optional" features. On the inside of this narrow district is a collection of high-end shopping, art galleries and fancy resturants.
"Temple Ave." - Besides being the location of the city's namesake temple, this is Libertatia's gay village. The same architecture of the beachfront now holds leather bars, bathouses, and little novelties catering to the culture.
"Red Light District" - Brothels and adult stores are allowed just about anywhere in the city, but are mostly concentrated in this area. The brothels here are generaly comfortable and safe for the workers... since they police their own area with an iron fist. The highrise in the area houses a local broadcasting studio that films porn. Time slots are open for amature film makers...
"Industrial Park" - Most manufacturing plants and werehouses are found in space due to... well... the abundance of space, but reletively smaller industries are located here for easy access to it's businesses. Very little environmental regulation goes on here and squatters tend to take up residence in some of the disused buildings.
"Favelas" - Improvised neighborhoods make up the bulk of the city, extending far beyond this map. A large enough majority have electrictiy and sanitation and actually provide a comfortable - if unique - livestyle for the working class. Other areas are not so fortunate and are in complete squalor. Besides several smaller versions of the city's main districts, there is an abandoned space port hidden somewhere amoung the shanties. Currently there has been reports of disapearances within this area...

yupyup, I'd like to implement elemets of it in places. Most obvious would be particularly tall sections of the favelas, also Kowloon itself was researched on the basis that an anarchic society could mage to build structures over time.
This city has the possible bonus of housing residents for a knack for enginering - which would be a requirement for building and opperating a space ship at some point.
