Okay, so I tried my hand at coloring with some colored pencils. I didn't want to stick with a traditional grey/silver colored armor, but I couldn't use black, since that is the color of my scales. So, I figured brown with red accents would be a fairly good choice.

Constructive criticism eh? (i know jsut who to call up [calls up Zero Punctuation]). But anyways. In my opinion it goes with three things to look for:
1) Weather or not you (as in YOU in this case) are good/bad/neutral
2) Usually the colour concept when you mentioned that you are a black dragon does actually have effect on the top choice.
3) Keep an eye out for MAJOR and MINOR colour schemes. They can sometimes bite you in the ass...HOWEVER they can make the best masterpieces of the portrait :3
But yea...that what i would go for.
If you where good, per say: Well basically its what you have already used in the above portrait :D
If you where bad then a chrome-black with red would be the core choice
If you where neutral well...depends, but usually, i see done with just a leather-like black and that's all, if you know what i mean.
(oh gawd...a talked too much, i better keep my dragon speech a tad faster :P)

I think you did great with the blacks
As far as my critique goes the color isn't smooth in some spots, like the wing membrane and the shoulder pad. Like it doesn't flow together right? does that make sense. Like a lot of times you can just use a kleenix or a shaders to fix that.
