What does it mean
to have skeletons
in one's closet?
How does one
come to acquire
a skeleton in their closet?
Is it shame?
Shame that makes us hide
that which will inevitably be found?
Perhaps pride?
Fear of appearing a lesser person
for something out of one's control?
Skeletons are usually fearful
So is it the fear of judgment
for who you are, what you are, did, or will do?
No matter what makes for one
they are there
in a closet in which cannot be locked
A closet is used for storage
of things that will one day come out
whether you want them to, or not
So why store skeletons
in a place
in which is accessible for misconceptions?
Why put a skeleton into storage
when they are meant to be acknowledged
accepted, and left to pass?
Take a moment
and think about a closet
free of skeletons?
Open the closet door
and catch the first that falls
acknowledge its life and lay it to rest
Remove each skeleton
acknowledge it's relevance
and free yourself of the terror they incite
Some skeletons may be broken
but you can fix them, acknowledge them
and give them a proper resting place
No skeletons means no fear
The closet is now open
and ready to be filled with more useful things
There will always be those
who would bring shame and judgment
but have they cleaned their own closets?
Judge me as you will
Shame me if you like
as I put my skeletons to rest
Only through owning your faults
and acknowledging your dark side
can you truly become one for the people
to have skeletons
in one's closet?

It's all about how you treat your closet. As a place to store things, or as a place to hide things.
For me, as a hopeful to become part of a positive change through disability advocacy, I want to let folks know that my closet is open and free to view. To allow fear of judgment or shame get in the way of your life and its goals is a true pity.
My hope for you, dear friend, is that your closet stays free of skeletons. This way you are empowered to be you without fear of the judgment of others.

This is a fantastic poem!
As hard as it may be, I've always tried to be truthful as I can possibly be. Therefore I have nothing to hide. Today, I actually got into a conversation with my stepmother, that spiralled into her asking about if I had any fetishes. She started to say a few, but when she said diapers, I just smiled. XD She thought it was funny, and we got back on track to talk about our original discussion about food. Feels good not to be ashamed of who you are, or what you do. :)

What you just shared is wonderful. It's my hope that more of us can reach that point where shame is not a factor. Instead, we know who we are, what we are, and find all the positives in ourselves while allowing the negatives to slip away.
It is the people here who have taught me so much about how I am me and should love who I am. People will judge but that doesn't change who we are unless we let it.
We will all always have our struggles with our unique differences. But being open about them instead of hiding them away is a great way to stay one step ahead of anyone who might think they'd have power over you for revealing something you've already made widely known. :)

Thank you for taking the time to read this poem and comment. :)
So much anxiety, depression, and other miserable things could be avoided if we could just be more understanding and accepting of people's differences. We all make mistakes but some are miniscule in comparison to the good we do for the betterment of our friends, family, and fellow humans. :)
