Yeah, the piece was inspired by a 1997 PC game called Interstate 76, which is part of a long line of automotive carnage, including Twisted Metal, and Carmageddon, all tracing back to the 1975 cult hit "Death Race 2000."
It's super cheesy by today's standards, but if you want to see the original film that inspired this year's "Death Race" then check out "Death Race 2000." I saw it years ago and... well, if you don't hold any high expectations for it and you just might enjoy it ;)

I recently reinstalled my old copy of it on this very machine, which is running up to date XP and it worked beautifully. I think there's still a patch lost somewhere that I would need to install for it, because I found that there were a couple quirks with the npc vehicles where when they were driving straight their front wheels would flash left to right and because of that the would drive very very slowly...
Yea well. I rarely do this kind of hi-contrast comic-themed awesomery. Vdisco does more of that, but I appreciate your sentiment despite my attempts at being humble by rudely dismissing what you said. ARRRRGH. I don't know how to speak. D:
How about "We help eachother even when we're not aware of it!" as a um.. Kinda proverbial reply.

There was that game for the 360 with weapons strapped to cars (name escapes me at the moment), but that was more like Burnout with guns (from what I hear; never had a chance to play it, so maybe I'm gone). Nothing so far with the odd cars, characters, upgrades, and general awesome tone.
If ever was there a game that needs a next-gen installment, it's Vigilante 8

There have been a couple mods.. I know there is one for Battlefield 2 that looks very authentic to the original games, and then there's one for GTA San Andreas... Which is actually a mod within a mod. You need to get the multiplayer mod for it, and THEN you can get a mod that changes the cars and adds guns and stuff, but looks a lot less faithfull to I'76.
AND! I think there's another Vigilante 8 coming out this fall... It's called Vigilante 8 Arcade or something. I have no idea what it's about, though.

Interstate 76! Fuck yeah. Im suprized that another person knows about it... that game was fuckin fun as hell, then Vigilante 8 was awesome, then the other awesome carnage games, Carmageddon and such... also must put a mention out to the Mad Max trilogy >:3

I remember watching my friend play Interstate '76 in the last '90s and at the time, we were amazed by the graphics. Granted it is by pale comparison versus today's games, but still, the idea behind it was well written and the music....the MUSIC! It was so funky it just made you want to dance! Amazing picture, I didn't know anyone could be so detailed in Oekaki!
Oh man, the music was almost the best part about those games. I still listen to that soundtrack all the time. I don't know how they managed to put together such a great score for a video game... but the composer and bass player for the soundtrack was Arion Salazar who went on to found Third Eye Blind, on keyboards was Tom Coster, a previous band-mate of Carlos Santana's, and on drums was Bryan Mantia who had played for Primus and Guns N' Roses... (thanks wikipedia for providing the names). I mean, EPIC lineup.
This is one of the coolest pictures I've seen on the internet. Car combat is my favorite genre of games, and the first game I played on PS1 was Vigilante 8 2nd Offense. You did an excellent job on this, and might I add that it would look cool on a t-shirt.
Speaking on Interstate '76, I recently purchased a copy of Interstate '76 Nitro Pack in the wrapper at a flea market for $5.

I'll tell you right now that I have the original I'76 soundtrack on my regular WMP playlist. The graphics were pretty good for 1997 considering the competition in driving games at the time. I have the full version right here, but I was never able to get it working on WinXP.
"Hey Stampede, how about a poem?"

Interstate 76 was a PC game released in 1997 by Activision... I don't know if it can be found anywhere now, nor do I think it would hold up by today's standards, but it's one of those nostalgic games for me. There was a spin-off series of games called Vigliante-8 (V8) of which I think a sequel just came out for Playstation 3... Or was it Xbox.... Well, it was called V8 Arcade I think?

OMG I can't belive I missed this!
I absolutely loved Interstate 76, I have the gold edition lying around somewhere, I'm going to install it again and see if I can get my new wheel working with it.
If you never played the game with a wheel you missed alot of fun, its so much better with a wheel. Probably because the cars handeled somewhat more realisticaly than any other game like it.
Interstate 76 was and still is my favorite game of that genre.

Arg, yeah I wish I would have had a wheel. It would have improved the experience I'm sure... I had a force feedback joystick which worked well with the game, so I could at least drive the cars more accurately, but a wheel would have been more suitable.
The game obviously left a lasting impression on me too :)

I just looked up the mod for BF that you mentioned to someone else, it looks realy promissing. Its a good thing I picked up a copy of BF2 recently. I bought it for the hell of it, and now I'm glad I did!
I would love to see a complete stand alone remake of I'76 with all of the content from the expansion included, that would be awsome.
Unfortunately, games that get remade very rarely come out as awsome as the original. For Interstate, nothing but original would be good enough.

Maaan, it was ONE AND ONLY car game with REAL automatic transmission, where all positions working properly. I've got myself Andretti Wheel back in thoose days, and i had 80% of fun just cruising the map.
In the "right-pedal action" period, we have almost no chance to get something like is76 was.
FurriaK out *tchhhh-t*

I actually have pretty fond memories of pulling a hand brake turn at high speeds, chucking it in reverse to drive backwards while I unload with my front mount guns, and then whipping back around to drive away. >.< Tactical driving was probably the best way to dominate in that game, knowing how to get the car lined up for every situation.
I think moves like that would be pretty hard without a wheel though.

Lincoln Continentals for the win.
