Obligatory cheesy "Stig"-like pose with new 4-wheeled ride
"Some say..."
Well, can't claim to be the Stig. but I could pose and gear up like one... well, the Stig's motorcycle riding cousin at least ;)
While driving a hand-me-down car has some benefits, namely getting it for free, they are hardly one's willing choice. Seeing as my last one is on it's final legs: close to 20 years old, done ~270000km (~167400mi), fuel guzzling (3.0L V6 unit that barely do 12L/100km (~19.6mpg) over a good week), with impending failures left right and centre to fix, thought it's time to actually get a brand spanking new ride for once.
After studying the options (in New Zealand) within the budget that I've set, and a few test drive later...
... the Honda Jazz RS (2015 model) was the final choice.
Honda really knows how to build engines. Despite being 1.5L I4 unit, manages to pump out 97kW (130hp) while rated at 5.4L/100km (~43.6mpg) combined cycle.
And as the car weighs just a tonne (1070kg to be exact), means that it beats many other larger and more powerful cars in terms of power-to-weight ratio. It certainly shows that off-the-line and when overtaking on the motorway (80kph - 120kph / 50mph - 75mph).
With 50/50 city/highway driving so far, managed 6.3L/100km (~37.3mph) in real world driving on it's first tank of fuel. So hopefully it improves as the engine breaks-in over the next thousand kilometres.
The LED headlights are really cool, and Honda pretty much threw all the gadgets in as standard (like an Android based 7" LCD touchscreen console, SatNav, reversing camera, auto-collision-detection/avoidance system... the list goes on...). The RS package adds sports trim and pretty 16" alloys on the outside too.
As for the interior space... lets say many auto-review blogs/magazines/sites have described it as "TARDIS like". I can put my standard overseas travel load-out of 2 large hard-shelled suitcases + carry-on bags in the boot, without dropping the rear seats down. The rear "magic seats" are nifty too, and can transform into a mobile dressing/prep room for fursuiting/cosplaying by lifting one side up to provide tons of vertical space. Awesomely practical!
Really happy with it so far, and hopefully will keep me happy for the next few years ^_^

I've got an '09 model myself. Great little car and fun to drive too. Also incredibly spacious inside for it's size outside. Best mileage I've ever gotten out of it was 52 mpg. I've put nearly 250,000 miles on it and it still runs like new. It's even survived an incident of a puddle being deeper than it looked, all the way up to the windshield. Great little car.
Oh I was mightily impressed with the interior room inside. I'm not exactly small (1.8m/5.11"), and in my comfortable driving position set up front, I can actually sit at the back and my knees aren't touching the back of the seat in front... roomier than many el-cheapo budget airline will provide you in economy/coach!
And as I said before, all my standard convention travel load-out (2x large hard-shelled suitcases + carry-on bags) fit in the boot, without needing to drop the rear seats down. In fact I tested this during my overnight test drive, and by that point I knew this is the car to get.

Yeah I'm not a small person myself, haha, I always get jokes from my family about it being a clown car. But I managed to get 12 people in the back, seats folded down of course. It was rather interesting. But I can fit 2 large mountain bikes in the back and that's what's important to me.
Sometimes though I wish it had a bit more power since I live in an area with lots of hills and mountains, when it's fully loaded it can sometimes struggle up the steeper hills around her, but it does pretty good regardless.

Honda really improved on the Engine over the 3 generations on the Jazz/Fit. I wasn't really impressed with the 2nd (last) -gen offerings so I held out getting the new wheels until recently.
I tested both the 1.3L (73kW/97hp) and the one I got in the end (1.5L @ 97kW/130hp). While general driving about in town feels the same, you definitely notice the power difference especially on the many hilly/windy "B" roads here in New Zealand. Even though fuel economy is not as good, it really was a no-brainer compromise to go with the bigger unit.

Mmm I like the offerings on the newest generation as well, though my favourite body styling is the 2nd generation, '09-'13 sport models. I didn't have much choice though since I got it back in '09.
Ah see, in the US we don't get multiple engine options, for the '09 it's just a 1.4L rated at 105hp, but I run it on higher octane fuel and a better air intake and exhaust (not the annoying sounding kind, lol) and manage to get 130hp out of it. Plus on higher octane fuel it boosts my mileage by about 5-6 mpg.

At the moment I am running it on the recommended 91 RON (official figures Honda advertised/certified with), which would be equivalent to 87 (R+M)/2 rating in the States.
Here in NZ we also have 95 RON (90 US) and 98 RON (93 US), so might try those to see how much more power gets squeezed out of the unit.
Although price difference is something I have to ponder about. 95 is NZ$0.09c/L (NZ$0.34/gal) more than 91, and 98 is NZ$0.16c/L (NZ$0.61/gal) more than 91. So on a full tank (of 40L), 95 will be NZ$3.60 more while 98 is NZ$6.40 more. Unless the fuel economy actually beats those, might not be worth my while going for the higher grade juice.

So... did you show up at the Honda dealer in that gear? :D
Random tip: you can measure fuel mileage in square meters if you want to. https://what-if.xkcd.com/11/ and scroll down a bit.
> auto-collision-detection/avoidance system...
I'm waiting for someone to buy a car so equipped and just use the "aim it and floor it" driving style. Hey, the car automatically knows when to slow down, right?

Sadly didn't turn up geared like that... of course they'd have thought I'm there to take delivery of their motorcycles instead of a car.
The "City-Brake Active System" as Honda calls it is quite useful to prevent inner city slow (<30kph) "oopsies"/dings, but could get quite annoying on a few scenarios. In fact it deployed on me twice now, at the parking lot gate at my work. Granted I was being impatient and creeping forward when the barrier arm is still going up, but in no way was I going to "crash". Well, the computer thought otherwise.

The ABS on my car will sometimes kick in if I hit a pothole in a parking lot at low speed. The first time it happened I thought something had broken, but I eventually learned "they all do that".
I haven't driven a car with radar brakes yet. I think I'd have to find an empty parking lot and drive (slowly) at things of various heights and compositions (cardboard boxes, metal shopping carts, plastic trash cans) just to see what it would do. But then again, I'm a nerd. :D

Are you the Stig in this photo?? https://s3.amazonaws.com/anthrocon/.....00+px+wide.jpg LOL
