I just returned from my holidays in South England and have had a lot of chances to see otter (albeit only in wildlife parks). The British seem to be very fond of these animals since I already found three Otter Sanctuary during my stay in Cornwall and Devon, so I really had a great time
I spent quite a time watching this Small Clawed Otter playing with a stone (and also together with his 12 other fellows).

They seem to be quite hyperactive, all the time playing with something in their hands
I'm pretty fascinated by their social life. One female is the leader of the group and all other otters are following her, squeaking all the time. But every now and then the whole group of otters suddenly stops simultaneously and listens quietly for a short short moment and then continues playing and squeaking. Just like checking "Everyone's still around? Yep, everything is fine, let's go on".

Heh, I've only observed bachelor groups of those guys. When they're active, they mostly do their own thing. One swimming, another climbing rocks, another inspecting some gravel. But there's a leader of the bachelors and they compete for position all the time, like two or three times a week. The leader chooses makes all the important decisions like where the communal toilet is going to be that day and where to sleep.
They do seem to love stones. I went to a zoo in San Diego, and an otter was playing with a penny someone had thrown in. I was irate at first that someone would do that, but my worry was relieved as I stood there for thirty minutes or a bit more, that the cute dear never made one mention of consuming it.
