And on a less personal level, it's extra interesting to me since i have a character kinda like this and have thought quite a bit about the sorts of things that would happen, for better or worse.

And the creature could not be happier, as its personality was just data living in the cloud to begin with. For instance, it finally has functional elbows. Functional elbows! Can you believe anyone would make a creature like this without working degrees of freedom built into the arm? What a nasty bit of life that was trying to grab onto things. But now such trials are a memory of the past, which will face proper forgetting in the due course of the next several days. After all, there isn't room for such bad recollections when there are so many new memories to be made with brand new elbows!

Data is like a machine's soul. The machine may die, but the data lives on if you take it with you. Although most of mine is in back up storage, I have data all the way back from when I was twelve. That's sixteen years of life stored in 1s and 0s chronically my journey through life.

First I saw this picture, which made sad.
