Animal type: Bird, secretary bird
Habitat: Savannah
Description: Combusken are bird-type pokémon that live on savannahs and occasionally in colder grasslands. It is largely terrestrial and can only fly with considerable difficulty for short distances. This is not only because it has evolved over time to hunt its prey on foot, but also because of the impractical design of it’s wings. Combusken’s wingtips are formed by three feathers that have changed into hard (though hollow) shells from the same material as its beak. It flaps its wings at enemies to drive them away. Its real weapon, though, are its legs. It can kick with enormous speed and force. It uses this quality both for defence and hunting. It eats insects and small, mammal-like pokémon such as Rattata. One can see solitary or small group of Combusken scouring the savannah, occasionally breaking out in a run and then trampling franticly when encountering prey. They can run quite fast – much faster than they can fly, at least – but prefer to fight rather than flight. Though they can spit fire from their beaks, they rarely use this ability in their natural environment. Fire is more of a risk than an asset on the savannah anytime outside the rainy season. Though Combusken are rarely harmed by the fire themselves, with a bit of bad luck, a fire can waste their entire habitat, killing off their prey, leaving them to starve. Nests are usually built in holes in trees or between bushes. Usually, only Blaziken mate, but there have been instances where Combusken lay fertile eggs and successfully raise young Torchic. These Torchic leave the nest fairly quickly, though they stay near their parents for several weeks bit longer. They are kept in check by loud, sharp screeches made by the Combusken. Less high-pitched screeches are used for scaring off other Combusken from their territory. Females can be easily recognised by their shorter red headfeathers.
I used to colour these with coloured pencils. I tried markers/coloured inks on this one. Though I think it works well on a brightly coloured bird like Combusken, I'm going to go back to coloured pencils after this one.
