So for a good while now I've been wanting to try out art on Photoshop. When I saw 
Halfelfaedyn start creating these fellows and gave the link to it it kinda kicked me into wanting to create my own. Unfortunately I really don't need more than one fursona so if there's anyone that wants this guy here you may have him.

That grey layer you're talking about, if you select it, right above the layer there is a checkbox called Preserve Opacity, if you check it, and then try coloring on it, it should stay within the grey.
That's then the Clipping Mask. You can make them easily by coloring a section and Preserving Opacity. Makes great gradients when used with airbrush tool, etc. But make sure new clipping masks are on new layers.
