Made with two pens, four sharpies, and pencil. Hoping to get Copic markers soon. I only just realized how much fun markers are. ^^ Anyway, here is a lazing Ginseng.
THE KALEK
The kalek is a magical creature living primarily in the Greater Mountains of Akuk down through to the Lesser Mountains of Sanlek. There are two primary subspecies, the northern kalek and the southern kalek. They roam through the mountains in packs, and are highly social creatures with complex relationships to each other. Northern and southern kalek are not very different from each other except in size of the mane and body, the smaller southern subspecies around the size of a red fox while the northern subspecies is around the size of a husky.
An interesting note about the kalek is that, by birth, all kalek are hermaphrodites with fully-functioning organs associated with both male and female anatomy.
They are highly magical, specializing in fire-based magic, shapeshifting, and small-range teleportation. Kalek can cast and control fire, and are able to conjure it, naturally and at any time of day. Their shapeshifting is limited, however, to four or so times within their hours awake. By sleeping, their energy reserves are restored to normal. Small-range teleportation is also limited and causes wear on the body. By constant teleporting, kalek also shortens the ability to shapeshift by up to 3/4 of the usual allowance.
However, they all have their own weakness which they are adversely afraid of. For example, a kalek whose weakness is nickel will be frightened by anything that resembles the metal, and will avoid it. Exposing nickel to the skin of such an individual would result in something similar to a chemical burn on the areas touched.
Kalek have a very prominent place in both Salken and Zalstodd society as well. To the Salken, they are known as "The Manes of Fire", contrasting salstromnijr, which are known as "The Manes of Earth". The Salken generally view kalek as a positive force which bring cooked meat to the first Salken civilization, as kalek are known to employ fire magic to bring down exceptionally large prey, which the Salken then may scavenge. Zalstodd, however, view them as dangerous beings.
