In continuation of the Top 12 Lists, here are my Top 12 all time favorite Boss Themes of any game franchises to date. I doubt many will agree with this list, or at least the order of some, but (le shrug).
So, here goes nothing!
12. Matt Helms (No More Heroes 2) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFpUt1Ywcok
Now, lemme start off by saying that nearly every boss theme in the NMH series is incredible; NMH2 especially, but Helms' theme remains my all time favorite of the bunch, because it so perfectly fits the action / horror feel of this boss fight. Helms is a murderer who was killed as a child 40 years ago, and he's been reincarnated as this big fat, axe murderer with a "Child Doll" face who sounds like a giggling little kid. On top of that, his massive axe doubles as a flame thrower! And in this theme alone, you can hear the rising fire in this haunted house as you avoid getting chopped to bits by this axe-wielding psychopath.
11. Alec Trevelyan (GoldenEye 64) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQZLEegUK74
GoldenEye 64...
Need I say more? This theme feels genuinely personal and is a fitting final level / final boss theme for a one on one shootout all across this vast satellite dish.
10. Zant (LoZ: Twilight Princess) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNVPUC_mtoA
Disappointment in Zant turning out to be a Daffy Duck not withstanding, I still greatly enjoyed his boss fight, and the themes had a large hand in that. Each one represents a stage of his fight, which; up until the final stage, is a recreation of some of the Temple Bosses of the game, and as each one passes, the themes get progressively more and more unhinged, until finally it's just you and Zant in front of Hyrule Castle, and he's straight up lost his mind. The final theme is my favorite for that reason, because it so perfectly matches Zant's moves and mentality. He's rapidly moving, flailing, almost like a mix of child and psychopath, and the theme fits that perfectly.
Zant alone, makes me understand why Twilight Princess is the only rated T Zelda game, because he's a dark, almost Shakespearean usurper, and his psychosis is not one I'd expect from a rated E game.
9. Tabuu (Super Smash Bros Brawl) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utOa8ZMKwSA
This is the ULTIMATE boss fight in all of the Smash series. I mean, finding out that Master Hand actually had a puppeteer was one thing. But all throughout the second half of Brawl's campaign, there's this ominous realm we have to trek through constantly, where the gateway opens just a little more with each passing level, and to finally cross through that gateway and do battle with this Puppeteer...
...This theme just straight feels like a famous Martin Lawrence quote; "S$*t just got real..."
8. Albert Wesker (Resident Evil 5) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1lSANS2Wh8
Of all of Wesker's three themes in the game, this is my favorite, since it's our main fight with him, and because it so accurately matches the title. There truly is a wind of madness to Wesker and his plan, despite how he carries himself. And above all else, it feels incredibly climactic. This man has been the big bad since 1998, and we've never even had a fight with him in any of the games until RE5, and THIS is the main battle here and now...
It's an All or Nothing moment, and I'm sure I'm not alone in loving this particular track or boss fight...or character. XD
7. Anton Girdeux (Syphon Filter) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzrMkSvMSO8
The infamous pyromaniac of the PSX era; Anton Girdeux. I don't care who you are, no matter how brief this villains' presence was in Syphon Filter, no theme will ever be as catchy as this, as we did battle against a Pyromaniac French Terrorist in the Memorial Hall of Washington D.C. Park. It just oozes with espionage badass...
6. Genesis (Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21HT7UJ9ays
Hey, I picked A one Winged Angel, that should count for something!
Anyway, I digress. Reason I love Crisis Core's soundtrack above all other FF soundtracks is because it feels genuinely different. There's attitude amidst the 'fantasy' element of the soundtrack, and none more than our first boss fight against the main villain; Genesis Rhapsodos. This theme so perfectly captures the element of having a fierce sword fight against a vicious traitor, inside a factory of all things. On top of that, there's a hint of futility in this theme, not that it's futile to defeat Genesis, but that it's futile to expect any change. Genesis is still degrading as his Black Wing demonstrates, he won't stop, and stopping him may not be possible without killing him.
5. Namir (Deus Ex: Human Revolution) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eiShGVUzqo
I don't care what anyone says about the Bosses of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, I love them, and a huge reason are their themes; Namir's especially. This is the man responsible for making Adam Jensen become an augmented man-machine, who single-handedly ruined his life and stole the woman he loved from him. This theme makes the fight far more personal and vengeful than it otherwise would be, and it's greatly amplified if you took the Nano-Chip in the middle of the game and are now malfunctioning, because you're finally up against the man you've been after since day 1, and not only do we see his ENTIRE BODY is augmented, but now, none of our augmentations that we've been upgrading and unlocking all game are even working, AND our vision and hearing is completely skewed. This fight is what a FPS boss fight SHOULD be; one that completely messes with all our senses.
...Unless you didn't take the Nano-Chip, in which case, you can kill Namir in seconds and make this fight really disappointing...great theme nonetheless! :D
4. Monsoon (Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Rg9SkfrveM
Now, I know Revengeance is a Metal Gear game, and I'm supposed to have only one theme per franchise, but MGS and MGR are two separate franchises handled by two different developers, that's why Revengeance feels like a Bayonetta game instead of a Hideo Kojima. That said, holy crap, this boss fight was an adrenaline rush.
Monsoon is jarringly fast, constantly on the offensive, and can separate his body parts at will, often making landing a single hit impossible...ESPECIALLY when he's running around you. And this theme perfectly represents that lightning speed and high octane action to a tea.
3. Deathstroke (Arkham Origins) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4en9hAuis0U
Arkham Origins had a few boss themes I'd have loved to have include, but none as perfect as Deathstroke's. See, Deathstroke's boss fight is a dance of wits and speed, and each stage of this fight is greatly represented by this theme. The first stage feels militarized and utterly one sided. The second gets more intense. The third has a 'tables have turned' feel where we; the player, are finally getting the upper hand on Deathstroke. And finally, the last stage has an 'anyone's game at this point' feel, where Slade draws his blade, without his mask and unleashes hell on you, and you to him.
2. The Fury (Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCJXqOUd068
I really wish I could find the full theme. But fortunately, the portion on the soundtrack that is available is the part that matters. This is a theme that is every bit a spectacle as The Fury's fight itself is. It's explosive, fiery, and almost a power struggle, as The Fury continues to ignite the tunnel in flames and your room to move gets more and more narrow, forcing you to stay on the offensive against this Pyronaut, and as the fight goes on, Fury gets gradually more aggressive, flying more often, running through the flames and lighting the tunnels and everything around him ablaze.
THIS is what the fight against Firefly in Arkham Origins should have been...and his theme is infinitely more memorable as well.
1. The Templars (Assassin's Creed) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3o038osEIY
Assassin's Creed has always had an amazing soundtrack, but none as incredible as the very first game.
I'm not someone who usually enjoys all bosses having the same thing; including the final boss, but in this case, "Access the Animus" works perfectly, because it so greatly represents each scenario the Templar targets give you. Such as pursuing the targets in the streets of the Holy Land; like you would with Talal, Abu Naqood, and Sibrand. Or trying to escape a vast array of guards as they give chase after you've silently assassinated targets like Tamir, Ganre, Madj Addin, and Jubair. To facing off against a great obstacle like you do when you battle William de Monferratt and his Templar Elites head on inside his arena-esque Citadel or Marie and her vast array of Templar and Jerusalem guards / archers all united against you in the graveyard. But more importantly, how PERSONAL it can feel when you're doing battle against the main villain one on one in the fields of Acre, or against the true main antagonist, your own mentor; Al Mualim...
So there's my list. See if you agree or disagree, or would like to share your own lists on your page or in the comments below.
And if you HAVEN'T heard any of these themes before...enjoy! :D
Aslo, here are the honorable mention boss themes I wanted on the list but couldn't:
