Since people seemed to enjoy the last upload of older and obscure animal books, here's some more.
Nightmare Journey, World Enough and Time, Time's Dark Laughter, Cat's Pawn and Cat's Gambit are all SF, with the furry characters either genetically engineered or 'aliens.' Longest Flight is realistic, non-talking animal. Ancient Solitary Reign is Watership Down-type talking animals with owls, and Faithful Ruslan is partly political allegory, partly simple dog story.

I red the whole Ancient Solitary Reign trilogy as a kid and loved it! One of the few talking animal books which got translated in Italian. I remember discovering later that they took a bit too much "poetic license" in the portrayal of owl behavior though (compared to Watership Down and other books in the same vein).
