Aand another cormorant. On a lake in Charlottenburg this time. The coot was all but happy the visit, but the cormorant just wanted to rest a little bit.

naww, thank you :)
Iam using an rather old Camera, Canon 7D (from 2009).
My main lenses are a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 and a Canon 500mm f4 IS USM (its a prime lense, no zoom)
Iam shooting using a beanbag. Laying on the ground and waiting for the bird to appear. If you want to shoot birds, you need patience.

... or a monopod with a 2-way-head (Sirui L-10)

Wow, thank you so much for taking a moment to answer with such insight! Patience is a virtue with any wildlife photography but birds are tricky! I only recently started into photography and my first subjects have been the hummingbirds in my backyard (what a tricky fare!)
Your shots are all pristine! I suspected you had a long zoom prime, those delicious edges! How do you like it generally? Is it easy, after some practice, to position yourself where you are not too close or too far from the action?

I don't know how its where you live, but here in Germany and most of Europe the birds are extremely shy - so you never have enough focal length. So in 90% the 500mm (actually 800mm because of my crop-camera) are good. For the really hard ones I use a 1,4x Teleconverter or sometimes even a 2.0x. Zoom is sometimes nice to have (especially when you shoot birds in flight), but a prime lense is better concerning image quality. I lost some pictures because I cannot zoom, but not many.
But you always loose quality with each meter you are farther away. Simply because the air is not 100% clear. If you can get closer (with camouflage, a tent, whatever :)) you always win. On an average day the Image Quality drops hard at 30-40meter distance.
I think you can shoot hummingbirds with around 200mm when you dont move.
I already wrote something in the comment under this one.
Maybe a few work-pics are interesting for you.
Shooting out of a car is -great- for geese, cranes, etc because a car is no threat to them. The espace distance of the common crane drops from 300m to 30m.

Charadriiformes are a good subject. They are relative trusting and are quite beautiful.

Hiding behind my backpack works, too xD

And maybe as comparison. Same place, same time. Handy normal and Handy through the viewfinder:

Goodness!! Thank you for sharing such insight! I suspect a long focal length prime lens (albeit definitely on my wishlist!) is something of a distant dream for me at present. I also have a crop sensor camera which I am using to hone my skills before investing in a full frame. I will likely still keep this other body for my 70-300 zoom so I don't have to swap lenses in situations that vary (I found that to be a frustration on my recent trip to Africa. It was also hard to predict when I'd need a wide angle view or a zoom for critters. But a great crash course in photography to be certain!)
One more question! How do you find teleconverters? I assume you use it for the prime? Or have you had much success with it on a zoom? I thought about getting one before my trip but decided against it for multiple reasons. I am glad I did as we dealt with a lot of overcast days where I already could not push shutter on my zoom very much without having to significantly bump up ISO.
Thank you again for sharing all of this! I have been following your photos with avid enthusiasm. Please do continue to share! You have a magnificent eye for framing, color and choosing just the right moment of action to share!

It has a lot todo with patience and knowledge about the birds. I spent hours, my whole weekends watching birds.
Its really hard to tell where I usually go. I depends on what I want to shoot. Most of my pictures occur in the close proximity to berlin, on small lakes or even industrial fallow areas.
