Here we go, sorry it took so long folks but here is the third chapter of Division Seven, the fourth chapter should be coming along soon enough and will see the return of Misha but for now let's introduce two other characters! I apologize for the short length of this chapter, the fourth will be much longer I promise!
Chapter Two
Takes place after: Oresko's Story Chapter One
A lone scientist ponders the secrets of the black bricks on the abandoned island of Avalon.
The wind howled outside. Long branches scratching against the stone walls of an old church. Rain drops splattered against windows, pooling in the lips of plants and grime that had built up over the years against the old structure. This was the island of Avalon.
An artificial island project, intended to be a large urban development filled with luxury and wonder. One of many projects around the globe hoping to attract investors that had fallen through over the years. Avalon was a mixture of art deco and gothic in design, built to house many, many people. It was a dream that would never be.
The waters of the ocean crashed into the concrete, old fences rattled in the powerful winds and the clouds above hung low.
Noise from small CRT television was nearly drowned out by the weather outside, the broadcast half static until a hand reached over and adjusted the dials. The grey coyote sighed before, pulling out a keyboard and plugging it into a nearby monitor, the church was littered with computers surrounding amongst various lab equipment. Holes had been drilled into the stone and the entire church converted into an advanced workspace complete with a variety of tech.
Steam sounded off in the distance. The canine began to type immediately, making adjustments to frequencies and soon enough the signal cleared. He adjusted the dial on the monitor once again.
"The same subject who appeared to stop the armed robberies at Coalition Technologies' Vancouver offices has been spotted more around the greater region. The feline, who still unnamed appears to be a female lynx although cameras have failed to get a proper close up on her face it is confirmed that the female subject supports some sort of tentacle like appendages from her back while roaming the city."
"Sightings have been confirmed during the anywhere from the evening to the night, while it is known that this feline has helped stop quite a few more crimes throughout the city police still believe she may have knowledge of the missing items stolen from Coalition." The screen went blank as the coyote hit the power button, news reports would not change the fact that the teams had failed to recover another one.
He sighed, rebuttoning his lab coat and pulling it snugly against his body before rubbing his eyes. Brown orbs scanning across the equipment before stepping over to one of the containers in between the pews, thick glass, plenty of liquid inside and suspended in the middle smooth black brick. His eyes followed the tanks, many of them empty except for two others filled with the exact same items.
It had been years since he had been assigned this project and since then, despite being able to collect so little in terms of samples from the field he had managed to discover much. Each of these 'bricks' as they had been referred to carried the same if not a similar molecular structure, they had no damage of any came, could not be simply scratched or dented but they all reacted differently to temperatures and when exposed to various substances.
Physically they were all exactly the same, it was only when he tried to do something to them that these things seemed to do anything differently at all.
Of course whenever he questioned he never got told where they came from, but he had his suspicions. Break ins occurred all over the world especially at very important locations. They had to come from somewhere.
The doctor stepped up to one of the consoles between the containment tanks, unlike many of the other computers this one had a microphone. He pulled it close.
"Lucrezia." He spoke and the black screen came to life, displaying all sorts of data before displaying that of a young lynx. She had to be at least near twenty, it was hard to say. Not everyone looked their age these days.
The young lynx blinked green eyes back at the canine and smiled. "Yes, Doctor? How may I help you today?"
"Do me a favour and trigger the electrical frequency tests using the data sent in yesterday. I want each one tested at a different frequency and then run the tests of from each on the sample back at the core."
"Yes, Doctor."
"And when you've finished, coordinate everything through the network. I want to see what the simulations suggest." He watched as the feline gave a slow nod before the screen went blank, soon after the containment tanks sparked up with electricity and he stepped back to watch.
Each of the three bricks began to glow, not in any specific pattern that he could see although it was always different even if they applied things exactly the same. He hoped that after all these physical tests that the systems back at headquarters would be able to discover something worthwhile from all of this, give him some insight into what these things were.
Although he had some theories already. The organization that had contacted him to research these things had a hold of at least one to begin with, although they kept in under tight security. The sample had been shown to react positively with broken objects, assuming many of the larger pieces still remained it could restore a variety of things including glass, wood, metal although it had yet to be tested on organic subjects. At least as far as the doctor was aware, they may have tested it on organics, living or dead, without him. The full nature of this organization was quite beyond him in truth.
“These things will revolutionize the world…” The canine sighed, looking up with tired eyes to the dirtied stained glass as rain droplets splattered against it and fell into the moss and branches below. “... Not even I can say how.”
There was a part of him that wanted to see this through all the way, when he first got the call and had seen the first sample he knew that even people he had worked with in the past had not encountered such a thing. There was this burning desire to know more and even in this isolated place he felt as if he was being watched, perhaps they had installed cameras, microphones, something somewhere. He had not taken the time to search and there was the assumption that if he did find and remove any such device they would simply replace it.
It was impossible to tell what the endgame was when it came to his research with these ‘bricks’, perhaps they were going to use them to develop, as unlikely as it was, technology to benefit people. Maybe the research would simply be used to develop weapons to sell to the highest bidder or support a nation they were in league with.
Maybe if they found something unsavoury about these things they would attempt to destroy them altogether along with any research they found. As the days went by and more data was fed into the computers from various scans and tests, it became more and more likely in the coyote’s mind that these people were going to do something unpleasant with these things. They seemed to have just as many questions as he did, although while he kept his own questions to himself their questions never stopped coming in.
Eventually they had left him an assistant in the form of an artificial intelligence, one who spoke so lifelike. A digital lynx who went by the name Lucreiza, although occasionally she went by Luca. He was not sure where she originated from, and any questions based on her origin she seemed either uncomfortable, as uncomfortable as a simulated being could get or just refused because she was not ‘allowed’ to say.
Sure enough, he assumed that they logged whatever questions he asked him some database to keep track of him, see whether or not he became too much trouble to keep hanging around in this crumbling lab.
At this point he really had only one hope. Hold out long enough to research a way to destroy these things. Whatever they truly were there was just far too much potential for them to be left in the world, and the longer they were around the more he felt they were creeping towards doomsday.
