Just in case anybody is interested, this is basically how i coloured the "acorn hunter" gift from sharenwimbs sharenwimbs
My explanations might suck so feel free to ask questions, also i'm not claiming to be an expert at this. Far from it really, I'm just an enthusiastic amateur.
This is just to show off one advantage of vectors, you can scale it to any size without loss of quality.
Although then you notice mistakes like the shading of the eye i messed up a little and the different thickness lines i used to fill the colour gaps in.
Vectors will never beat normal digital techniques for quality and detail, not without a very complicated picture taking up 100's of megabytes anyway. Everything i end up doing looks like a cartoon, which is a style i like anyway.
These will be moved to scraps at some point

Vectors kick ass for that. If you try illustrator for this let me know and i'll help with any issues. They're are quite a few little annoyances waiting to screw up your picture.
Also there's a live trace feature, on a clean black and white picture that's a decent res you might not even have to ink it yourself! Although it's not perfect and you can spend just as long tweaking nodes as you would have spent inking the picture in the first place. That's one reason i just start inking the damn things right away without trying it.
