No problem. I'm afraid I was having a little bit of artistic block on your commission, so I spent the Saturday doing this instead I hope you find it useful. I really love Inkscape and GIMP (I'm sure you've noticed!). They can do some incredible things without spending a dime! I just wanted to document my process and show others.
Feel free to shoot me questions if you come across any! I'd be happy to help In my tutorial I assumed a basic familiarity, but It should still be good for anyone who wants to learn. It is an incredible software-- like a free photoshop. It also supports making animations (for GIF icons). I'm thrilled that you have an interest. I'm sure you will enjoy learning it. Good luck!
Well. I think you don't need to use inkscape. You can draw whole line using the GIMP only.
When you use Inkscape+GIMP, you have to handle .svg and .xcf but .xcf only when you use Path layer in the GIMP.

Yep. I used to use that technique when I first started learning. But Inkscape is more versatile with vectors. I need it for stackable shapes for my "bubble" art (though I could do it with layers in GIMP, but that would be over 500 layers! And would be very tedious to work with). Also, you may not know this, but gimp will import inkscape .svg files directly. I usually export BMP through Inkscape, because I usually have a specific resolution in mind. [I can't open your file for some reason. PDF, right?]. Thanks for taking interest! It makes me happy!!!

I use only 1 layer per character because I don't use stackable shapes.
I use 'open curves'. So I don't have to erase any line.
You are right. Inkscape is more versatile with vectors. But your drawing line has fixed width. not vary. If you need to modify your art, you will have to do again export and re-arrange process.
Moreover, after export your Inkscape into the GIMP, you can simpley erase unnecessary lines. Juse using Erase tool.
