TV Special! The Joy of Donkeys
By born2beagator
The donkey felt strange. As if his mind was getting sharper. Slowly he rose to two hooves. As he did then he felt the fur receding all over his body, leaving dark brown skin. His muzzle pulled into his face, leaving a human face in its place. Ears sucked into his head and rounded out. His mane seemed to flow up to the top of his head, leaving him with messy black hair. Finally his tail pulled into his body.
Asinus felt incredibly wrong. Not only was he on two legs now, but he didn’t even have anything of his true self left. He’d become human. Slowly, the events of the last couple of days returned to him and he gave a chuckle as he looked around the town to see the numerous donkeys. Now he remembered. He was the spirit of Pleasure Island, escaped into the world, and this town had been the first to fall. Looking at his human body, he was disgusted, he longed for the simple animal mind he normally possessed when around other donkeys. But this was a good thing. It meant his power had grown. It’d be much easier to deceive humans now with the ability to shift fully to human.
The donkey spirit found an abandoned car, and headed to the next town somewhat sadly. He hated leaving his kind. But he had work to do. First, a test. Humans had something called TV. It could be a lovely medium to spread Pleasure Island’s blessing…and he had just the thing to do it. A magically made series all about donkeys. Now he just needed to get it on the air in a major city. As luck would have it, there was a TV station not too far from the new donkey town. He noticed that he was somewhere in Texas. Austin was the name of the city he was entering. He got out of the car at the TV station and headed in.
As Asinus entered the TV station, everyone looked up at him.
“Can I help you?” Asked the receptionist.
“Yes, can I speak to whoever is in charge of the programming for today?” Asinus asked, exerting his power on the girl.
“Certianly!” She said, nostrils widening across her face. “Boss! Someone to see you!”
A man in a suit came out of the back room. “Ah! You must be Asinus. My name is John. ”
Asinus shook his hand, trying not to laugh at how easy this was. The man knew his name before ever meeting him. John led him into the back room.
“Now I understand you have a proposal for me.” John began.
“Yes. I have a series of my own making, and I think it will put your ratings through the roof.” Asinus said, handing him the paper with his idea.
“Hmmm…interesting. You want to put this program on all channels?” John asked skeptically.
“Just for today to see how it goes.” Asinus said.
“Very well. We’ll give it a try. At the very least, it will make an impression on Austin. We’ve never done something like this before.” John replied with a smile.
Asinus headed out of the station. When he was out of earshot of any human he broke into a laugh. “Haw! Make an impression on Austin. He has no idea. Haw haw heee haw!” The donkey spirit noticed joyfully that he could bray again, although he was still human. He was beginning to understand his power now. It was like a cycle. He’d been perfectly equipped to spread the blessing. When he came to a new town, he was perfectly human. But as that town changed, he’d gradually change with them. When the last donkey was born, he’d join them for a little bit before another town required his touch. No one would ever find him like this.
Finally the weekend was here. This had been a long week and Don couldn’t wait to get home and veg out in front of the tube. He was a straight A student, but it took a lot of hard work to maintain. Likewise, his brother Cody was a model student. As he drove he and his brother home he noticed something strange. No one was outside. Slowing his car down, he in the windows of some houses as he passed. It looked like everyone was watching TV. Suddenly his phone rang.
“Hey sweetie! Its Mom, hurry home there is a really cool show on!”
“I-“She had already hung up. That was weird. He pulled into his driveway and his mom greeted him at the door. Something was strange about her, her nostrils seemed to have stretched wide across her face.
“Hey there guys! We’re watching some TV, join us!” His mom said happily, leading him into the living room.
“Oh good!” His dad called from the couch. “The next show is starting! It’s called The Simplicity of Donkeys.”
“Donkeys? Is there nothing else on?” Don asked, settling into the couch as Cody settled in beside him.
“Not today. Every channel has something to do with donkeys. But they are actually pretty good.” His mom said. “Shhh. It’s starting.”
Meet Equus asinus. Also known as the common donkey. This animal is extremely simple. All it cares about is finding the best grass to eat. They have no worries whatsoever. In fact, wouldn’t you like to be like a donkey? A simple life? No worries?
"Boring!" Don said. "Who wants a simple life?"
“Yeah. We have our whole lives ahead of us. We are graduating soon.” Cody agreed
"People who don't finish school." Mom said. "Beats a complicated life”
Don blinked. His mom had said that so nonchalantly. Normally his parents pushed him to stay in school. “But you finished school.” Don said.
His mom shrugged. “Worst decision of my life.”
Cody and Don’s mouths fell open.
“Shh!” Dad said in annoyance.
The donkey loves grass. You love grass. It is so healthy, and it’s plentiful! In fact, wouldn’t you like some now? Imagine never having to shop again!
. "WE do love grass." Mom said, licking her thicker looking lips. "It's sooo good..." Don frowned.
"Ma what was that all about?" Don asked.
"What was what?" Mom replied, confused.
“Would you three quit it?” Dad asked, his ears twitching in annoyance.
Watch as the donkey grazes peacefully. He never has to go to the store or spend money! Its also healthy. In fact, you should make a nice salad right now. Thats all for today folks! See you tomorrow, and remember….simple is beautiful!
Don watched in amazement as his parents got up and immediately went to make a salad. “Uh...Cody? Did you notice anything strange there?”
Cody stared at the TV for a few moments, before shaking his head, looking at Don. “Um, other than mom and dad acting a bit different?” He asked slowly.
“A bit? Did you hear mom? She talked like she wouldn’t care if we dropped out of school...and what was she talking about? We love grass? What does that even mean?” Don said, shaking his head and putting his hands up.
Cody let out a soft snort. “She was sounding like that announcer from the show.” He leaned forward, to look through the doorway into the kitchen, where the two’s parents were currently busy making salads. “They’re even taking it’s advice, look what mom and dad are making. Dad hate’s salads, no way he’d be willing to eat one, no matter what mom says.”
“Did you see mom’s nose?” Don asked slowly.
Cody shook his head. “What about it?”
Don didn’t really know how to explain it. “It was...stretched. You didn’t notice at all?” A munching sound could be heard from the kitchen.
The teen shook his head. “No, I must have missed it. I wasn’t really paying attention, I mean….It’s just mom.” He said with a weak shrug.
The munching sound got louder. “What is that?” Don asked. He looked into the kitchen and his eyes widened. “Uh Cody? I think dad likes salad.”
Cody was staring as well. “Dad hates veggies, no way he could do that.” He whispered softly, shaking his head.
“Are you blind Cody? Look at them, they are plowing into-what the heck?” Their parents suddenly dropped their utensils and lowered their faces into the bowls. “Mom, Dad! What are you doing? You are eating like animals!” Don said, rushing into the kitchen with an incredulous look on his face.
Cody was right behind him. Their father looked up at them. His lips had connected with his widened nostrils and pushed out into a soft, black muzzle. “We’re just eating boys, now come on, join us.” He said jovially.
Mom looked up with the same changes. “Yeah this is good! So much better than that nasty meat. The movie was right wasn’t it Cody?”
Cody paused, hesitating at suddenly being put on the spot. “Mom….I don’t like salads, I like meat.” He said slowly, his gaze flickering from her, to the bowl of salad. It did look nice, delicious almost.
Don just watched the whole scene with shock. What was with his parent’s faces? Those lips looked familiar, but not from a human.
“Here hun, let me get you your own bowl.” Mom walked over and prepared another bowl, setting it on the table. “Come enjoy with the family!”
Cody eyed the bowl of his own. He glanced at his mother for a moment before slowly going to sit with them. “I….I guess I could try it, it does look kinda good.” He murmured slowly, as though he was trying to convince himself.
“Cody? What are you doing? I thought you didn’t like salad either.” Don asked with surprise.
Cody slowly took a few bites of the salad, hesitantly. However, after the first bite, he was shoveling the salad into his mouth as though their was no tomorrow. Thankfully though, the teen still remembered to use his fork. He glanced at Don and grinned from ear to ear. “Don, you’ve gotta try this stuff, it’s amazing, I never thought some stupid salad could taste so good.” He took a few more bites, a look of bliss came over his face. “It’s like nothing I’ve ever had before, come on bro.”
Don’s stomach grumbled. “Oh alright.” He took the next bowl and sat down.
Cody flashed his brother a large smile, glancing down at the fork in his hands before he tossed it aside. He bent over and let his mouth descend into the bowl, eagerly chomping away at his salad. As he ate his lips seemed to be changing slowly, becoming more like his father as they pushed forward into a soft black muzzle.
“Wha--Cody feel your face.” Don said in confusion. For some reason though, he kept glancing at his salad.
Cody glanced up as his brother spoke. His hands moved up, rubbing over his soft, warm furry muzzle. He chuckled as his hands brushed through the course fur and along the rubbery lips. He’d probably have to clean up a bit after his meal. “What about it Don? Do I have something in my fur?” He asked, tilting his head.
“Your….fur? Cody, you don’t have fur. Mom, Dad, neither do you!” Don said.
Cody let out a snort. “Of course I do Don, come on, stop joking around, eat your salad, it’s fresh and delicious.” He told him. He tilted his head. “What’s wrong? You always love when we get to have these salads. I mean, sure they might not be as good as grass, but we need some variety right.?”
His father gave a brief nod at his son's words. “Come now Don, eat your food and stop being a stubborn ass.” He told him firmly before going back to his meal.
“But...you three are eating like animals! And Cody, what do you mean it may not be as good as grass?” Don asked. He was so confused now he was starting to want to eat just to get his family to stop messing with his head.
Cody just gave a shrug at him. “Come on Don, just listen to dad, you’re making things too complicated.” He complained with annoyance. “Remember, simple is beautiful.” He told him cheerfully, his muzzle descending back into his bowl.
“Okay Okay!” Don sat down and picked up his fork, watching with disgusted as his family at face first, making snorting sounds. He’d eat, but not like an animal. Stabbing a mouthful of salad, he stuck it in.
His eyes went wide as the taste assaulted him.
Cody paused in his meal as he looked up at Don and grinned at him. “See, isn’t it great?” He asked happily, licking his new muzzle. “Told you so.”
“You were right.” Don said, forking more in. But the fact remains...you three look like animals!!! Seriously, your lips are black and rubbery...like a..a..donkey!” Don said as it hit him. “We have to stop watching those movies!”
Cody frowned at his brother’s words. Hadn’t his lips always been this way? Hadn’t he always had a muzzle? Cody was fairly sure he would have noticed if he’d just suddenly developed one. “Come on Don, stop being that way, We’ve always been like this, and why would you want to stop watching those movies? Donkeys are awesome!” He added excitedly.
“Mom, Dad? Are you okay with having the muzzle of a dumb animal on your face too?” Don asked, confused. He hoped they’d suddenly sense something was wrong, because if they didn’t...well was he really being too complicated?
His father looked up as he finished his food. “Of course we are Don, We’re just the way we are supposed to be.” He told him firmly. “Really, what’s gotten into you today? You're asking so many questions. You should just stop thinking, it’s more simple.” He said with a nod.
Don shook his head. “I can’t afford to do that. School is almost done.” he said.
Cody rolled his eyes as he glanced at Don, finishing his own meal. “Ah come on Don, just relax, who cares about school?” He said, a lazy air about him as he spoke.
“I do! I’ve got straight A’s. You guys may be able to convince me to eat salad, but I’m not quitting school. Cody you are coming with me in the morning too.” With that, Don stomped up to bed. His dreams that night were...strange. He dreamt of a world of donkeys, and he was one of them. He lived a simple life, free of worries. It was the most relaxing sleep of his life. It ended with one phrase… “Stop fighting...don’t you want that?” Don mouthed a silent yes in his sleep as his alarm clock neared ringing.
When Don came down to breakfast the next morning, he found his brother and family eating once more, only something was off. They each were sporting long, gray furred tails ending in a black tuft hanging down over their chairs. Apparently they didn’t care about this either because they had cut a hole in their jeans to allow them through.
Cody glanced up and smiled from his breakfast, another salad. “Morning bro.” He said happily, before quickly getting back to his food.
Don’s slightly protruding jaw dropped. “You have tails!” He said simply.
Cody laughed as he saw Don’s jaw drop. “Course we have tails, what self respecting person wouldn’t?” He asked, shaking his head. “Geez Don, what’s gotten into you, you’ve been acting crazy since yesterday.”
“I have good reason. My brother, mom, and dad are acting, and starting to look like donkeys!” Nevertheless, Don sat down to his morning salad without a fuss. He found the greens easier to eat this morning, as if his lips could grip them better, although he still used a fork, like a civilized person should.
Cody sighed softly, rolling his eyes at his brother. He was always so serious, he just didn’t know how to relax and let go. “Do we really have to go to school Don? I thought I saw a nice patch of grass in the backyard, under the tree, I was thinking of trying it, it looked tasty.” He tilted his head. “If you want, I don’t mind sharing with ya.”
“No Cody, I am not going to act like a donkey with you.” Suddenly an idea hit him. “You guys are fursuiting. Of course.” Don laughed, relieved. “Okay Cody, lets go, you donkey you.” Don rose and was out the door. He started the car and waited for his brother.
Cody let out a soft grumble, his tail lashing from side to side as he finished up his meal before following after Don. He didn’t see a reason he had to go to boring old school. That was way too complicated for somebody like him. But Don wanted him to, so he’d do it for his brother, at least for today.
The town looked fairly normal to Cody all things considered. People were grazing, bucking and smashing windows. Who needs windows though? They confine you when you should be running free. Who wants buildings? You can’t graze in them. School was just another boring building like all the others, a glorified pen. Not what being free was about. He rolled down the window and a donkey in a yard brayed at him. “Heee-haw!!!” He brayed back.
Don almost ran off the road. “Cody? What the heck was that!? That sounded real!” He looked over to his brother and almost screamed when he saw his ears visibly stretching. “Cody!! You are turning into a donkey!” He slammed on the brakes.
Cody’s growing ears twitched as the car screeched as his brother slammed on the brakes. “Don, what are you doing?” He asked in surprise, glancing at him. “I was just braying was all, no need to nearly get us killed.” He told him quickly. He seemed to totally disregard his comment about turning into a donkey. As though he already considered himself one.
But Don didn’t start driving again. He was transfixed as he watched the ears slowly stretching until they were high over his brothers head. Cody had a stupid grin on his face. “Cody...do you not get it!? Look at this town! Look at yourself!!! Something is turning us into donkeys! For all I know, I’m next!” He said, beginning to panic.
Cody smiled as he slowly looked out the window, at the many donkeys that now began to fill the streets and yards. And of few, strange looking donkeys, the one’s who still walked on two legs, or were missing fur. He glanced back at Don. “Course we’re all donkeys Don. Being a donkey is amazing, no fears, no worries. We just get to relax, just a simple life. Grazing and relaxing.” He told him with a happy nod of his head.
Don shook his head as he saw Cody’s hair draw up into a black mohawk. “Lets just get to school.” They pulled up to school to find kids in various states of changes streaming out. Don’s jaw dropped. On the billboard was a sign that said “School Cancelled..forever” And under it were the words “Simple is Beautiful!”
Cody grinned excitedly as he saw that billboard, he looked over and gently punched his brother’s shoulder. “You see, who needs dumb school?” He asked him. “You always spent so much time studying, you never had a chance to have any fun, come on, why don’t you come relax with us. Then you can see, simple is beautiful.” He told him proudly. “Me and you, just like when we were little.”
Don stared at his brother as he headed home, defeated. “But...My scholarship..what will mom and dad think?” He itched at his mouth.
Cody eyed him for a moment, having had his head out the window through most of the journey home. “Mom and dad won’t care, they didn’t want us coming anyway.” He grumbled softly. Though his face lit up with a grin as he saw a muzzle just like his own forming on Don’s face. “You think too much, just relax, be simple.” He told him. “Like us.”
“Okay Cody...since school seems to be out of the question for now…” Don blanked as he reached the front door. “Ummm...how does one be simple?” He’d never even thought of that. He’ always been a deep thinker.
Cody followed after him, his fingers had begun to look just a tad stiff, a faint black sheen forming on them as he walked after his brother. “Don’t think.” He said, as though that was the simplest thing in the world. “Just let your mind go blank, we don’t need any of those nasty thoughts, not when we’ve got delicious grass and it’s warm and nice.”
“Don’t think? Let my mind go blank? Cody you know me. I have no clue how to do that.”
Cody sighed softly ,shaking his head. “Come on bro, let’s go to the backyard, maybe getting some good grass in you will help.” He told him, a grin forming on his muzzle. “Trust me, it’s even better than any of those salads we had.”
“Hold on Cody. I need to talk to mom and dad. About school.” He said starting inside.
Cody blinked as his brother went inside. Why would his brother want to go inside of that stuffy pen? It was so much nicer out here then it could ever be in that little place. “Don, what are you doing? Mom and Dad are in the backyard.”
Don blinked at his donkey-headed brother. For some reason, the strangeness of this was wearing off. The entire town seemed to be in on this. Was it bad? He followed Cody.
“Hee-haw!” Cody brayed.
A female donkey in the backyard brayed back, and Cody led Don around the corner.
Another donkey, clearly male, also brayed as the two came along, his tail whipping back and forth as he looked at them. “Where have you two been?” He snorted, before bending down to take a chomp out of a clump of grass.
“Dad!? Mom!?” Don exclaimed.
“Hawww!” The female brayed before going back to her meal.
“What son? Whawwwt’s wrhooong?” He half talked half brayed, taking another bite before looking calmly at his boys.
“I’m worried.” Don said, trying to get over the strangeness of talking to a donkey. “I need to go to school.”
The donkey looked at him. “Whyhawwwww would you eeeehawever doawwww thaaawwwwt? No foal of myhawwwwn is going to goawwww to-heehawheehaw!!!!!!” The speech degraded completely.
“Cody??? Is that really our mom and dad? And why did they call us foals? Please tell me what is happening.” Don said without looking away from the two animals, his mind was starting to fog.
Cody reached out and took his brother’s hand, tugging on him. “Come on bro, let’s show you some more TV.” He told him gently. “That’ll help you settle down, then we can come out and be with mom and dad again, like good little foals should be.”
“O-okay.” Don sat down on the couch with his brother and flipped on the TV. A show immediately came on.
Welcome back all you assess out there! I hope everyone is having fun! Today we have a real treat to start out our programing. We are going to examine the beauty of having a donkey tail.
Don muted it. It had stopped on the picture of a ropey tail capped with a black tassel. “Cody??? Don’t you have one of those?”
Cody grinned at him. “Course I do Don.” He said, turning around to reveal his own, gently swaying tail. It had coarse gray fur, with a midnight black tassel of fur on the end. It swayed almost hypnotically from side to side in front of Don. “I mean, what self respecting donkey doesn’t have a tail?”
“I don’t have one.” Don said pointedly.
Cody grinned at him, giggling. “Are you sure about that bro?” He asked him.
“Wha?” Don began to feel a sudden pain in his rear, an intense pressure pushing back against his pants.
“Because it looks like you’re having a little problem back there.” Cody told told him as he move forward, poking at his pants. “You might want to get these cloth things off, they’re just getting in your way.” He said, looking up at him.
“Actually Cody...I kinda like it. What will happen if I keep them on?” Don said, bending forward a bit.
Cody began to bray for a few moments before he shook his head. “They’ll just get in the way of your fur and your tail.” He told him. “We don’t need them.”
Don began to itch his legs. He could feel his mind dulling. He was finally taking Cody’s advice. Letting his mind go blank. “I know...but lets just say I kept them on?” Don said with a grin.
Cody seemed to grin at him. He could see his brother was starting to relax, letting all those nasty, stupid thoughts go. “Well, you’d look like a pretty silly donkey.” He told him. “Who ever saw a donkey in those cloth things?”
Something began to click in Don’s mind. “Donkey?”
Cody nodded his head, slowly leaning forward, letting himself drop to all fours as he relaxed. Gray fur slowly starting to grow over his body. “Ya, we’re donkeys.” He told him. “We’re little foals, don’t you remember?”
Foggy memories began to slink into Don’s head. Memories of nursing from his mom...of standing on all fours, of his tail... Suddenly Don fell to his hands and knees. A pressure built in his cheat. Unable to hold it in, he began to bray.
Cody grinned as he brayed back to Don, watching as his brother joined him on all fours. He could see that bulge in the back of his pants, as though something was straining to break out, trying to tear itself free from it’s confinement.
Don felt the deep thoughts emptying with every bray. With each heave, his skull felt strange. Soft.
Cody grinned brightly as he watched his brother’s face slowly begin to change and morph. His mouth pushing forward into a long gray muzzle, his ears extending up and growing on the side of his head, while his hair slowly drew up into a black mohawk, just like his own. As the changes slowly engulfed his head, a layer of gray fur began to flow over his head and down his neck to start to engulf the rest of his body.
Don continued braying. The pressure on his backside slowly continued to increase, pain beginning to flare with every throb of his heart.
Cody smiled as he heard the rip echo through the room, seeing his brother’s tail burst free from that cloth prison. “See, your tail is looking really good brother.” He let out a loud bray, relaxing as he saw his brother’s form changing.
But Don didn’t say anything. He reached his long neck back and ripped the remains of his clothes off before trotting outside. He left Cody there. He was tired and needed to rest. With every step, he hands and feet helpfully hardened until he couldn’t feel the ground. Walking up to the two familiar donkeys, he knelt down and fell asleep.
Cody watched his brother go for a moment before following after him. He moved over to his mother as he gently let out a soft bray, relaxing, feeling the warm cloudy feeling flow through and scatter his thoughts, it felt so peaceful, he didn’t need to think, didn’t need to worry or do any of that stupid thing, he had his momma and daddy, and his brother too, wasn’t that all he needed?
Asinus had barely had time to check up on his new herd before he was on all fours himself. Apparently he’d found the sweet spot. TV. With that he could affect thousands at once. As he heard a final conversation degrade into braying, he could feel his own mind emptying. He blissfully embraced the animal he was, eager for the next time the blessing of pleasure island would call him to a new town.
