They couldn't kill the sandworms. without them they have no spice... no spice no space travel or immortality. There are serious hints in the book that Arakis is actually Earth and the worms were genetic engineered to produce the spice, but water kills them.

I feel terrible but from the thumbnail I completely thought this was a picture of a small character standing ontop of a huge character's glasses, which were pushed up on their head (the sand being their hair).

Now that I see what it actually is... looks great! Love the pose.
