Who remembers Sherdhat, the ronin weretiger? Yeah, Ming is from the same land as him. She's a major rabbit clan member. Now I know what you're thinking... lady looks like a dude. Well, Ming just doesn't like feminine clothing or bright colours. (That and she's not very busty anyways.)
Part of the reason Ming wears men's clothing is because she has some daddy issues - her dad wanted the oldest to be a son, but he got a daughter first. Especialy since after all - his children will both have major rabbit blood! He's just kind of a jerk anyway so Ming would often wear her brother's clothes to piss him off.
So yeah, while Mulan was somewhat of an inspiration (The rabbit clan is more chinese) there's no need to be posing as a man. Sort of a ninja rabbit, but that's... probably the closest thing to Ming, really.
