And this concludes the latest adventure of Westersloe Winterbough V, Master of Elfhame and magick-user in the service of the High King of Faerie.
After a somewhat embarrassing and irritating public display, a sojourn among the butterflies of Faerie may be just the thing.
And there is the matter of a gift left on the Master's desk at the end.
(For those curious, the name of the wolf-hound is directly taken from one of the pseudonyms used by the author Vladimir Nabakov, who was also a famous expert on butterflies.)
The next bridging story, "Interregnum," will be appearing here starting tomorrow, May 2!

The ladies of his household have just witnessed a prime extreme example of what the Wolf Queen calls "Pissy Little Roebuck" .
A chance encounter with Sir V proves to be just the anodyne for the Master's mood. We are fortunate to meet another of the true Faerie Characters who retain the magicks and essential essence of the of times that seem to be almost gone from the Shining Land.
Ooo-er has lost none of her magicks for working precious stone and seems to still wish pass on her thanks to her Master... even when he is in the depths of a sulk straight from the fifth circle.

Ah, THAT is where I'd heard the name. And of course, a Russian wolfhound...
Love the paperweight. Wonder how many elves will just assume it's quartz crystal should they happen to see it? OTOH, if they can get Ooo-er to wear at least some clothes, she and her cohorts would make excellent apprentice jewelers...
Interregnum does indeed sound ominous. Let us hope it's some other realm, not the Empire, that suffers from this.
Heh. Ixies. Wait. Ixies, and hints of a butterfly in WWV's colors. Do I sniff some foreshadowing here?

"You can rest assured, sir, that I have NOT made an investigation of the subject. I've never heard of a mix of species that might otherwise occur in nature, but any thoughts of, say, a dragoness-roebuck mix, aside from being mind-reeling, are highly improbable."
"While I have read many things written by my grand-sire, he never touched on this subject, thank Fuma. The notion that the Shining Land could be full of my blood kin of all sorts of unexpected species is chilling, and I will admit I was always afraid of bumping into a Winterbough of another kind."

Generally, elves are only fertile with their own species. Crossbreeding is possible but extremely rare. These Lusus Fumae are regarded as freaks by some, held sacred by others. It depends on where in the empire it happens to have been born. The last known example was the famed Jackalope of Sansburgh, who lived during the reign of King Otho (Sartorius' father; Adler I and Marshal Roland's grandfather)
