Everyone has a different technique, but for me the easiest thing is just a game of guess-and-check. Basically I just keep making the line until it looks nice!
Also, especially if I'm drawing bat wings, I tend to draw past the spot where the line is supposed to end. That way I can just erase the extra and what's left is a solid, unfaltering line.

Ah! See there's your problem. Go download FireAlpaca, it's completely free, takes up almost zero space, and works on PCs and Macs. You can set the pixelation of the canvas up to 600 dpi. Gimp usually doesn't go much higher than 72 dpi, which is terrible for digital art.
If/when you download it, just use the regular pen tool. If the canvas is big enough and your dpi is high enough, your lines will be nice and clean!
Side note: My canvas standard is 5 inches by 3 inches and my default dpi is 350

Yeah, I was the same way when I used Gimp. But trust me. If you want to make good, clean art, Gimp is not the program to use. Like Atalanta said, there are so many options out there! Just download Krita or FireAlpaca. They're super easy to use and it takes almost no time to figure them out
