Oh exactly, exactly! His entire mystique lay in the fact that there was some very real danger under the candy-colored exterior. He was formidable- controlled, wry, and benevolent- or was he?
The reboot just didn't click with me the same way- I'm a sucker for Gene Wilder.

The thing I like about Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka is that he played the buffoon, but he was always three steps ahead of everyone when they thought he was one step behind. From the moment he met the kids and parents at the gate, he was sizing them up, figuring out their game. And I'm sure he had plenty of advance information from Slugworth. But at the same time, there was genuine warmth and caring. For his work, and for those he deemed worthy of that.
I also liked the interplay between him and Mike TV. Boy, that kid could get under his skin. ;)

I'll admit, I hadn't looked at it that way until I read these comments, but yeah. I suppose that Gene Wilder is superior, simply because he was able to capture and create that scary deadly edge that really comes out during the boat ride, but still shows that he isn't as crazy as he appears. He's a pretty stable model for genius figures when writing.
I think I'll leave this here http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067992.....ref_=ttcc_ql_4
