The lighting in the piece forces your attention on the couch, so shades of dark gray and black mats were used to blend the background into the frame to keep the viewer's attention on the art itself. I chose not to use mats with a white core because the white borders would have conflicted and contrasted with the dimmed lighting in the piece. This one is also huge... takes up half a wall.
