May 5th, 2015, the day that I will prove magic does exist.
For as long as I have had an interest in reading fantasy stories I have been obsessed with magic. My youth was spent playing Magic Cards, dressing like wizards and generally being a nerd and looking back makes me cringe at how geeky I was at times. As time passed I grew unsatisfied with merely imagining I had magical powers and have started to ponder if magic truly does exist in our world.
For months, I went from library to library and magic shop to magic shop reading count books on magic. My head throbs as I recall trying to distinguish what could be true from what was made up all the while retaining my optimism and enthusiasm for the endeavor. As my initial study came to a close I was ready to attempt some magic and the one that came to mind first was summoning a magical creature from another world, a dragon.
Dragons have always been a favorite creature of mine, almost always dragons played a big role in the stories I read, and their general powerful appearances were both frightful and beautiful at the same time.
Taking the Draconomicon, a book on all things dragon, I ran through the pages to decide which species I would attempt to summon. I decided upon a small breed, a dogma, a dragon-dog hybrid. It is a rather gentle and playful species quite strong for its size, and most importantly, not a people eater.
Reading the summoning process I read through the ingredients:
Cyan Summoning Powder
5 Newt Eyes
Ashes from a Tree that lived for over a Century
and finally, an Offering of Life.
Most of the ingredients were easy enough to access atthe magic stores, but the final one, the Offering of Life was something I decided to do personally. With a knife, I cut my palm and bled a couple pints of blood into a cup. The pain of doing that was worse than any other I have ever known, but I smiled seeing the Offering of Life was my own.
With all the ingredients ready, I read the instructions of who to use them.
1. Make spread the powder on the ground as shown in the diagram to form the Summoning Circle.
2. Place the Newt Eyes on the power as shown in the diagram so that they are placed on the 5 points of a star.
3. Encircle the powder with the Ashes to limit the territory of the summoning.
4. Place the Offering of Life in the Center of the Summoning Circle.
5. Say the incantationfrom start to end without pausing.
Important Warnings to remember when performing the Summoning.
1. Make sure the Summoning Circle is not interrupted once the process begins as it will undo the summoning.
2. Make sure to properly say the chant and to fully complete it. Not doing so will undo the summoning.
3. DO NOT ENTER THE SUMMONING CIRCLE WHILE THE SUMMONING IS HAPPENING!!! Doing so can have drastic consequences.
Reading and rereading the instructions till I memorized them and the incantation I set up the summoning circle in my basement. Then sitting on my knees I began to sing the chant, the words utter gibberish, but sounded magical in combination. Just after the first verse was finished the powder caught flame on its own and glowed brilliantly. I watched with amazement, but did not stop saying the words. From the the Newt eyes burst into flames too and became the 5 points of the magic star and out from the center a strange blue arose touching the ceiling and spreading to the Ashes of the century old tree.
The final verse sang from my lips and I watched as a light descended from the ceiling and onto the floor and took the shape of the dragon I had summoned. I almost couldn't finish reciting in my excitement, but I steadied myself and succeeded.
Silently watching, I saw the dragon looked around curiously and took a few steps forward. My heart raced with excitement, but then sank as the dragon collapsed weakly onto the ground.
"What happened?" I cried. "Didn't I do everything right?"
The dragon cough and its breathing became slow. My body shook as I watched it start to die.
"No!" I shouted. "Please don't die!"
Ignoring the warning, I ran into the circle and picked up the dragon. The next thing I realized I was no longer in my basement, but utter darkness. In front of me was a judge's stand and all around me the benches for observers.
"Where am I? What is this place?"
"Mortal, you who have treaded upon into Aether shall now be judged," came a voice from the judges stand. It was an elderly man dressed in black and a tangled beard that draped over his stand and onto the floor.
"Judge? I don't understand. Who are you?"
"My name is Gidar, Judge of all Magic. You stand accused of the taboo of entering the Summoning Circle," he stated. "How do you plead?"
"I did do that, but it was because this dragon I summoned was dying even though I performed the Summoning properly."
"Did you now? I call the Overseer of Exchange to testify. Come forth Arjure."
Appearing on the witness stand, hooded man with a scale appeared. Placing down the scale he spoke. "Observe moral, on the left side is the Offering of Life you provided. Some of your own blood, correct?" I nodded and watched as he held a glowing ball in one hand. "This represents the life of the dragon. To summon the dragon to your world life equal to its must be given. Now watch." Placing the ball on the other side, he removed a pin keeping the two sides balanced and the side with the ball slammed onto the ground and propelled the cup of blood onto the floor. "Understand? Your offering was far too small to offer the dragon more than a few minutes of life. It will die soon all because of you."
"It was my fault," I said weakly. "I didn't realize it wasn't enough."
"The cost was a complete life," Gidar explained. "Mortals are so foolish, believing they can cut corners or twist things to their own convenience. Magic is not something that can be done halfway without terrible consequences. Now the dragon shall die all because of your selfish desires. And now your sentence shall be carried out for entering the Summoning Circle. Your punishment shall be death!"
"Death, both of us will die? Is there no other way?"
"Our rules are as binding and final as all magic. Nothing can be changed no matter the circumstances."
"I see," I sniffled sadly petting the dragon, it stopped breathing and was feeling cold. "Even if I cannot be saved, can he? Can he be sent back to his world?"
"He cannot," Gidar explained. "Only a sufficient offering of life can save him, but in here there is no life from your world to use. Your dragon is doomed as you are."
"There is no life from my world here except my own," I thought to myself then looked up at the judge. "If I am to die anyway, can I give my life to the dragon so that he can live?"
"You would be willing to die for another?" he asked. "It is quite uncommon for another to offer their very life for a summoning. Even moreso for a mortal. Very well, you shall die and your life will be given to the dragon. As a final statement, I commend you for your bravery. Mortals possess many terrible traits, stubbornness, dishonesty, greed, cowardice, and selfishness among others, but in the direst of times, some are able to show admirable qualities like courage, love and self-sacrifice. For that you have my respect."
He pounded his gavel and I felt my body grow cold and numb. My skin became dry and crumbled away to dust. Underneath it, I still stood a transparent spirit. Watching over the dragon, I felt myself slowly drawn into its body. The small dragon began to feel warmer again and then it began to breathe. I sighed with relief and placed it on the ground before I fully vanished inside of it.
"Court is adjourned," announced Gidar as he sent the dragon back to my basement.
