My little story of becoming a furry.
How I became a furry.
I haven’t been a furry for very long. It’s coming close to my one year anniversary of when I joined the fandom. However, I don’t remember the exact day I joined, but I wanted to give a little essay of how I became a furry. I started considering myself a furry during the middle of 2014 last year actually.
I had always been fascinated with anthropomorphic animals. It’s the old story, been interested but never knew there was a name to the fandom. I didn’t even know there was a fandom. I came to a realization that there was a fandom when the Nostalgia Critic gave a review on “The Adventure of Sonic the Hedgehog”. Even then I didn’t know the name or really cared.
It was a few months later that I was watching YouTube looking up video reviews for “Sonichu” because I thought the comic was bad and the reviewer was really funny. This You-tuber went by the name (or at least his videos went by the name) of “The Web comic Relief”, I thought they were hilarious. Enjoying the videos, I went on to watch his other reviews, but most of the comics he reviewed were furry comics. These were the bad comics, the ones that most furries tried to avoid, and they left me with a bad impression on the fandom. Yes, I was sort of a hater for a short time and thought that all furries were sex crazed perverts.
I never wanted to see any furry videos and I tried to avoid anything furry. I watched a few videos of what was a furry, especially a small documentary made on them. Looking back it was a well made video and it gave the fandom a very positive light. However, back to my point, I remember hearing some people saying that before they became a furry they liked things like Star fox and Sonic. I sat thinking to myself, “just because you like Star fox or Sonic doesn’t mean you are a furry.”
There was though a small part of me that found the concept of anthropomorphic characters interesting and I knew that not every picture or a furry was bad, this really help soften my view on the fandom; however, I still didn’t see myself as a furry. So I went to Deviant art and searched “clean furry,” considering this is the internet and you have to be careful of what you type down.
I searched and I really liked a lot of the art. I went back onto Youtube and kept hearing about this guy named Uncle Kage. I was curious and searched him up. I found him to be one of the most entertaining people to listen to. He helped me in becoming a furry. Even now I still didn’t consider myself a furry, but I was close.
I love to write, my page should be proof. The fact that I am writing this should also be proof. So I was writing and I came up with the Idea of Furry Fury. Wasn’t named that, didn’t even have a name then. However, this is what convinced me to join the furry fandom. I found myself enjoying writing about furry creatures than I did with humans. I found myself enjoying the fursuiting, the art the community. Now that I was writing furry, there was no doubt I had become a furry.
Almost every furry I have encountered have been nice, and supportive. There have a few that have had me question this; but, there is no doubt in my mind I will always be a furry. I will always love the community and the art.
So there you go, from a hater to a lover. I have given you my story of how I became a furry. I think it has been the best first year and I will always cherish this fandom. I will always try to defend it and cherish the friends that I have received. If you are reading this I thank you for listening and I hope you enjoyed this
