As a final, the last of the new items: A pair of real silk suspenders. (I bought a pair of dress pants second-paw, and they already had the suspender buttons so, you know, why not?) Nice, yes?

Ah. Well, the old-fashioned suspenders attach to buttons inside the waistband. I happened to get a pair of second-paw dress pants that already had the buttons in, but you can either have them sewn in or use the easy-to-attach "bachelor buttons". Then all you need are some old-fashioned suspenders, and there you go. (Mine are silk for a fancy suit, but there are lots of different suspenders out there.)
Button suspenders hold on a lot better than the clips, as you can imagine.
