Heh, funny you should mention that. My mother makes jar openers, and they really do help!
I'll share a little secret with you. Next time you're at a big box store like Wal-Mart or whatever, pick up a roll of plastic shelf liners. Cut the liner into a 5" x 5" square, large enough to fit around the cap of the jar with some room left over. Put it on the jar and twist. You'll have enough grip to take off the cap with little effort.
