*gasp* Two clean pieces in a row? It's another sign of the apocalypse. Again. xD
Anyway... bought a few watercolour paints the other day, and some paper to practice on. I have some better stuff thanks to a friend, but I don't wanna waste it on learning, so I'm using some crappy paper I bought to play with until I sorta know what I'm doing.
So anyway, here's my first -real- attempt at watercolour paint. What a difference having some idea what you actually want for a background makes, eh? :P This is way better than the first time when I was just slapping down colour for no reason.
And the pencil and paint seem to actually work together fairly well, even if it looks a touch grainy. My style is basically designed to work well with grain, but it has it's limits. The scarm looks especially bad. The fact I just noticed I forgot to shade the scarf doesn't help either. xD
Al in all, not perfect. But, not terrible. I think for a first attempt at watercolour paints when you're doing everything wrong and have no clue what's going on, I think I did okay. What do you think? :P Lemme know!

Yay for clean! n.n
The watercolors look awesome overall, but... I dunno, something about it seems to need a few touches. Alas, the only person I know who works with watercolors is
hobbpanda .

oh hunny, that background is beautiful! Very warm and natural looking. <3
I'm wondering, did you try laying down a layer of color over Ru, then using the pencils to shade it? I know some artists do it like that, you should give it a try. You might like the way it comes out, since the watercolor base will help tone down some of the graininess of the pencils.

Things like that are really quite easy in paint it seems. The only thing about paint that's messing with my head so far is that you actually have to work back to front... starting in the distance and working to the foreground, and when i worked in pencil I actually did the exact opposite for backgrounds. It's forcing me to learn good habits! *gasp* xD
Anyway, thanks a bunch :P
Anyway, thanks a bunch :P
I spy a Ru! *pounces*
i like it, the psoe is good and the bg as well. infact i really love that bg XD one can kinda see the paper grooves where the scarf and hair is, but ah well. as you said...no shading there. can't say anything past that though as i have even less a clue as to what painting involves than you do.
and i must admit its good to see Ru again :>

very nicely done. If I can offer some advice on painting with watercolours? Do the background first. Have your piece sketched and inked the way you like it, then paint the b/g first. To do so, mask off the character by painting the inner portion of it with liquid fricket using a synthetic bristle paintbrush. It'll repel the unwanted watercolour and keep it from seeping onto the sketched/inked portion. (= Once the watercolour is dry, you rub away the fricket with a rubber pick-up so you can paint the clean area
A short tutorial on what I mean:

Oops, I meant to say **frisket
I don't have the slightest inkling what a "fricket" might be. ^_^
Also, with the grainy-ness that you were talking about. If you want to eliminate the white showing through in the back, lay down a layer of a similar colour with your watercolour paints first. It won't stop the overlying pencil from coming out grainy because that's based on the paper type, but it will help cut down on the white glaring through the pencil.
If you want a smooth finish to it, I'd recommend some nice cardstock paper. If you get good, thick paper, it won't wrinkle up like a bitch. If you happen to purchase thinner stock, and if you water treat it first it wont wrinkle like regular paper. To water treat the cardstock, find a board you can tape the paper down on. Get some drafting tape or blue painters tape and tape the paper to the board. Not just small pieces in the corners, like around the entire perimeter. After thats done, take a sponge or a wide paintbrush and just paint plain old water onto the paper. Do that lightly and don't overdo it because you don't want to ruin the paper grain and make the texture nubly. Once it's dry, you can remove the tape and it's good to go!
(= Sorry for the crap load of info on watercolour painting. I do it often in my spare time because it's cheap and easy, so if you ever want help on technique or methods or just have a question, I'm all ears.
Ciao Babyluv!

Heheh, that was quite a lot of useful advice there. Some of it I already did, like doing the background first- you pretty much have to with paint. I don't mask the characters yet because I haven't got any of the stuff to do that with yet, but i'll get around to that eventually, for now I just have to be careful. And I'll probably try the rest of the stuff you said next time I play with watercolors. :P It's going to take some messing around and experimenting to get everything to do just what I want, but I think what you've said so far should help quite a bit. If I ever get stuck on something or need some advice I'll be sure to look you up :P
Thanks so much! <^^>
Thanks so much! <^^>
Not a problem Babyluv. If you want, I can pick up some frisket for you at the art store by my school. No joke, it's a massive warehouse and they have bloody everything you could ever want under the sun!
Wait, you know what, no, you don't have a choice, I'm getting some. You vill take it und you vill like it, ja! <3

Purple... crotchfuzz... l3
I want to touch you~ l3~~~~
I... love differently-colored patches of crotchfluff~ l3
That background is crazy-amazing.
I don't even know how to describe it, fantastically detailed~
And it reminds me a lot of this battle background from Final Fantasy VI: http://www.geocities.com/cyberfenri.....nsetforest.gif

Well I hope to get decent at them someday :P I'm glad you like it so far :3 I was thinking of trying your picture in watercolour as well, if you're okay with that? If not I won't, but I thought it would be neat since you did give me the stuff to learn it after all x3 And the brushes were fine, they worked great. Once they get soaked with water they soften up quite a bit, so it should do greatly :P I'm gonna have a lot of tun with them all. And I'm going to try the pencils probably on my next watercolour attempt, I think they'll be great for doing watercolours in smaller detailed areas. :3
Yus, gladly, but it's gonna be quite a while ^^; I've got a ton of commissions to do, potentially including one that could have as many as 100 people in it. No lie. But I've got commissions closed now so the list will slowly die down, and once they're done they'll stay closed for a while, so keep poking me every now and then about it and once I have some free time for them I'll snatch you up for it right away x3
