The classic Sonic games had some beautiful backgrounds, so I thought it’d be fun redrawing one of my favourites in a higher resolution (thereby making it less beautiful and more eye-hurty)
The aim was to get it to look as true to the original as possible (using a reference image: http://i.imgur.com/d95lpPG.jpg) but allowing for some minor personal tweaks.

Kind of can see something like this being used in the Sonic 2 HD Project. Really accurate and drawn really well. I do think CNZ was one of my favorites from Sonic 2 ('sides Chemical Plant Zone).
Heh, "Starlight Zone" (PAL-version)-tune combos surpringly well with this picture.
