Being election day, the day that I went to Calais was the day before VE Day (Victory in Europe), and the monuments and memorials that were dotted around the city were in pristine condition for the event. Most of my visit there was just a look around the city, trying a few of the pastry shops and bakeries as I went, and the city looked to be in very good order - they even had designated cycle paths, which was a joy after coming from motor-crazy Kent, even though they were on the wrong side of the road! ;-P
I also tried escargot for the first time in a family restaurant, and despite my distaste for garlic, it helped to counterbalance the texture of the snail quite nicely. The pastries were exquisite, especially the ones that came from the little corner shops, as those were incredibly cheap too! Sure, hardly anyone spoke English, but my pointing and broken beginners' French got me around alright, so all in all, a successful and worthwhile trip, that I would highly consider doing again; maybe even testing French country cycle paths to Dunkirk! If anyone wants anything in particular snapped, just let me know.
Hope you enjoy!

I tried cooked mussels in a Spanish paella a few years back, and I really didn't go for them, as with seafood in general. The snails are similar to any raw meat, and they drown them in garlic depending on which restaurant you go to. I would not go for them again, but at least I can now say that I've tried them, and have lived to tell the tale.
My thanks! I just went for the day, but I want to try to go again (hopefully without getting lost) before I go back to Wales. That is, if my poor, tired legs will let me. :P
