Old WW2 bunkers in the Golden Gate Bridge Recreational Park are probably some of the most interesting sights on my trip to San Fransisco... if nothing else for them being so dark, mysterious and creepy! (The fog horn playing in the background didn't help the creep factor) If this area isn't haunted or has some kind of urban legand attached to it, ...I'm... I'm disapointed!
Anyhoo, it also has some facinating architecture to it, like this here is where a big gun turret used to be I think. The bottom has some realy nasty standing water in it. Oh and don't worry, the shadowy figure in the back is my dad.

My grandfather worked for the Navy as a civilian (he even saw the B25's being loaded onto the USS Hornet to bomb Tokyo after Pearl Harbor). They could see very well out to sea.
Believe it or not, the US coast was attacked by Japan during the war by way of bomb balloons; to this day they occasionally still find downed balloons (last one was found either in Washington state or Oregon).
