I remember reading that -- in various times and places -- eating together was a much more crucial social event. I suppose its importance as a bonding moment still should not be underestimated.
I believe the big-brother-little-sister relationship could have used a lot more development. In my own work, the big brother is a crucial part of the series. He is the main one who teaches his sister about friendship!
