The Treaty of Versailles was a direct cause of WWII.
The French in their arrogance ground the German people's face in the dirt.
In a stunning bit of irony, when the French surrendered to Hitler, he had the same railroad car the Treaty of Versailles was signed in, brought to the same location and sat there smiling as the French surrendered.
Sometimes we DO learn from history. The surrender and rebuilding of Germany at the end of WWII is proof of that.
Then we have the cluster fuck in the middle East. Failing to learn anything from history, we see the results of that.

Vengeance is a dish best served cold, it is very cold at 25,000 feet...
and unfortunately every side sees vengeance. one side wants vengeance for the start of a war, the other wants vengeance for it's end, all sides want the wealth and power from the conduction of the war...and so war goes on because while those who fight it may have learned, those who lead nations don't care...

and at the start ALL sides were itching for a fight and were look for ANY reason to do so, so to lay all the blame on Germany was criminal hypocrisy.
and regal intermarriage was seen as a peace maker, yet most all the major parties were relations to Queen Victoria! Didn't seem to help...

Duh! It's all about asking the right questions. LOL I used your phraseology "WWI flight trainer" and *bing* the pic was right there.
Here's the info that is associated with with the pic:
"The Germans also had a rather sophisticated apparatus constructed by the Berlin engineer and pilot Franz Drexler. Back in 1913, this inventor had released a prototype for mechanizing and automating flight stabilization of large aircraft. These early giants, long-range reconnaissance aircraft and bombers, with a wingspan exceeding 40 m but with a relatively weak structure, required novel features to monitor spiralling. In 1916, Drexler produced the “Training Swing”, a device which could be considered the first German flight simulator. Its purpose was to impart the “sensation of hydraulic steering movements” to the potential pilots of large aircraft He brought in the man-in-the-loop in an otherwise automated process where an automat coupled, via a hydraulic system, the plane’s gyroscope and the control surface. At the front of his device was an electric motor that replaced the impeller of the aircraft generator. Behind that was the control module, from which four control wires moved the swing relative to the base plate. The student pilot thus learned to steer the bulky airplane with the tip of his finger."
You weren't far off the mark.
