Any reasonable sounding B.S. sounds educational if you put in on a card. Lionesses don't choose their lion. The pride is claimed by whatever lion kills or drives off the previous lion. Lionesses sometimes try to help drive off rival males but they're less likely to challenge a larger lion and older lions are usually larger, thus it wouldn't be sexual preference so much as self preservation.

Manes darken with age. There's also a tendency for darker fuller manes in cooler climates but that could be just increased shedding in hot climates dumping the hairs before they get long and old and skin-oil stained.
