Despite thousands of hours of study, dozens of dissertations, and millions of dollars of grant money, we are still no closer to understanding where the mass associated with ridiculactation events comes from, or where it goes. Production usually far exceeds the calories consumed by subjects, and while we have demonstratably shown that mass and volume of affected tissues increase during both long-term and sudden-onset episodes, the two are not always proportional. In some advanced cases, relieving a single cubic centimeter of swelling can require expressing anywhere from three to fifteen ccs of fluid.

After expression, fluids behave as expected, with only one important, if infuriating, difference: fluid produced during a sudden-onset event have been known to spontaneously vanish, either partially or entirely, but only when not monitored. A sealed, opaque container of fluid left on a countertop may suddenly find itself empty, while that same container, held by a researcher, will remain full indefinitely. No matter how complicated or indirect the monitoring is when performed, if there is any way to know when the fluid disappears, the event will not occur.
