“Alright everyone!” the Contest host announced. “As you all know, the next round of this Contest will be held tomorrow. However, you may not know that the second round of this Contest will be special! You see, from now until the semifinal round, the contestants will participate alongside another, randomly chosen contestant!”
[What?] Kitsune exclaimed. [That’s crazy!]
“This gives the contestants plenty of time to practice their Moves to try to take down their randomly-decided opponents!” the host continued. “They should remember, though, that the final battle will be against their partner!” The host turned to the big screen towering above the stage, which quickly began to show the contestants’ faces, shuffling them to randomly determine the teams. “We are now randomly determining the duos that will be participating in the next round!”
The Trainers’ faces eventually stopped shuffling, revealing the teams. Kitsune cursed silently as he saw who he was paired with. It’s not nice to curse. his Trainer reminded him telepathically.
But… It’s her! he thought. She hates me! And she probably thinks I rigged this somehow!
Well, then we should make sure she knows you didn’t. Rosa suggested.
Believe me when I say, I will.
Rosa and Kitsune met with their teammates a little later. “I have to say, I was impressed with how your Pokémon demonstrated her Beauty, even without commands.” the Snivy’s Trainer said. Kitsune snarled as he was mistook for a female. “…You don’t talk much, do you?” the Snivy’s Trainer asked. In response, Rosa opened and closed her mouth, as if to speak, but no sound came out. “…Oh. You’re mute.” Rosa nodded.
[It’s nice to see you again.] the Snivy told Kitsune. He just ignored her. [I, uh… Heard your name was Kitsune.] He didn’t respond. […I saw your performance today. I really enjoyed it.] She walked up to him after another silence. [If this is about your date offer…] she said as she placed her hand on his shoulder.
[Don’t touch me!] he growled as he slapped her hand away with his forepaw. [I have no interest in you anymore.]
[Wha-?] she asked, surprised. [Why not?]
[Because you turned me down. Remember?] he answered.
[…Well, yeah, but… That was before your wonderful performance.]
[You just want to give me motivation to win.] he said. [Don’t worry, I don’t wear those bows to lose.]
[That’s not-] she began, but she was interrupted by her Trainer. “So, how are we going to get these two to work together?”
Rosa pointed at Kitsune, who glared at the other Trainer. “Him? How’s he gonna help?” Rosa began to walk away, beckoning for them to follow. Kitsune followed quickly, with the Snivy and her Trainer following behind him until they reached a battlefield. “How’s this going to work?” the Snivy’s Trainer asked as Rosa set up a target. She stepped back behind the two Pokémon, and motioned for the other Trainer to do the same.
The Snivy looked confused until Kitsune said, [Use Energy Ball.] She did so, and he did, too, the twin Energy Balls spiraling around each other until they hit the target, a tail of sparkles trailing behind them. [Magical Leaf.] Kitsune commanded before launching a Flamethrower skyward. She quickly understood what he was doing, and sent a flurry of leaves through his Flamethrower before they flew toward the target, causing it to catch fire.
The target quickly burned up, forcing Rosa to set up another one. Kitsune came up with one more Move combination. [Use Aqua Tail, and keep it behind you.] he said, stepping behind her.
She lifted her tail. [Enjoying the view?] she asked before using Aqua Tail as he asked. He used Flamethrower to launch her toward the target, and she plowed into it face-first. He sighed at this, bringing a forepaw to his face in embarrassment.
“…That one could use some work…” the Snivy’s Trainer said as she walked over to pick up her now-unconscious Pokémon.
“And now, on to the next Battle!” the Contest host announced.
[That’s ours, right?] Kitsune asked.
[Yeah.] his partner answered at the same time his Trainer said Yep!
[Then let’s get going.] he said, and they started out toward the stage.
“First on stage, it’s everyone’s favorite duo!” the host announced. “It’s Rosa and Kitsune!” The Vulpix tuned their introductions out as he turned to his partner.
[You know what to do, right?] he asked as the first of their opponents got on stage, then the other.
[Looks like a Beautifly and a Gorebyss.] The Snivy observed. [Let’s get the Gorebyss out of the way first, so she can’t hurt you.] The Vulpix nodded.
“Begin!” the host announced, and the Gorebyss started immediately with an Aqua Tail directed at Kitsune. The Vulpix chose to block the attack with his own tails. His partner chose to cover the stage with Grassy Terrain before preparing an Energy Ball. Kitsune backed away from the Gorebyss and prepared an Energy Ball of his own, and the two launched the Moves at the same time. The Moves left a trail of sparkles as they spiraled around each other before colliding with the Gorebyss, sending her flying back until she hit the stage, Fainted.
[Now for the Beautifly.] Kitsune said as he shot a Flamethrower upward. As she did in practice, the Snivy sent a Magical Leaf attack through the column of flame, and the Beautifly was pummeled by the burning leaves. For their grand finale, the Snivy leapt over her partner, readying an Aqua Tail, and he launched her at the target with a Flamethrower. She flipped around at the last moment, hitting the Beautifly with her tail and knocking her out.
“And, after a beautiful and flawless performance, we have a winner!” the host announced as the crowd cheered loudly.
