'Wild', 'Behemoth', 'Force of Nature'... a selection of several words used by scouts to describe this particular player.
Sterling Bengtzing, born and raised in Jersey City, surely is a strong presence. Even having a front seat to his father's FBA career since day 1 (literally), there wasn't much attention or links given to him at first: Other than rumours of the reason of his dad's subdued 1998 season being related to an illness he got, his upbringing was as regular as the Bengtzings could muster for their only child.
When his parents noticed he started to develop rebellious tendencies and listed more than one bullying occurrence through his Elementary school life, Ferdinand did what he thought it was logical; introduce him to the sport he mastered and worked on for most of his life. Even if it was just basic shot practice at beatdown parks in the concrete jungle without much theory or formality behind it, he found something he could bond over with his dad as well as good channeling of energy. The makeshift therapy worked.
And that therapy soon became a hobby. Then an interest. Then talent. Then passion. For the young polecat, it was cemented, for his dad's both happiness and concern.
Starting high school, he enrolled into the local basketball team where, while his firecracker determination and iron will was noted, the polecat struggled to really fit in a certain position. One day, after an injury and a shortage of players capable left the team a Center short, Sterling threw his name to the hat. That game, which featured proficient rebounding and blocking from the mustelid, made him realize it: he was a darn good defender; fearless and determined. He dedicated the rest of his high school career perfecting the 4 and 5, a pair of scouts taking note of the 'pint-sized bigfur', a reference that was used even when he reached his current 6' 9". Short, but skilled
So far, his college progression, combined with positive responses from Europe-based teams on a tryout the summer after his high school graduation, cemented the polecat as someone to be wary of. Sterling's cavalier attitude, alpha-male mentality and confidence make him impossible to miss on the court. His size doesn't seem to interfere in his blocking and rebounding capacities (Getting a double-double with points and blocks in one occasion), it even helps as he's reported to be notably speedier than the average bigfur. On the downside, he can't be trusted with a free throw, as well as long range passing and assisting. He's also reported to run into a lot of foul trouble if sparks get flying due to said attitude. He's not known to be a huge scorer, but isn't afraid of distances when taking shots nor he lets show nerves or mistakes as he describes: "On Court, there's no time to panic or hesitate. Do or die"
Midway on his studies, he decided to freeze his university career and declare the FBA Draft to start a new journey. "It's been 20 years since my dad's start and I got a hunch that my time is here: It's now or never." he's credited as saying. Ferdinand so far has been kept silent on the matter, but it's hard to think he isn't at least a bit proud.
***Scout Notes***
Sterling Bengtzing is a most interesting player to watch. He displays a level of confidence and a hardened attitude not common at his age and carries himself with a great sense of pride. This is credited as having helping him develop and get in that Bigfur mentality, making many forget he isn't the typical size, as evidenced by his killer instincts and ability to channel the crowd energy the best, even at away games. At the same time, it's also credited as a notable obstacle, as the mustelid's attitude was described as quite hard-headed and abrasive, and his statements have landed him on hot waters before.
“Polarizing” would be a most fitting word, some fearing his firecracker attitude would bring him trouble both on the court and the locker room, but many others saying that is the marking of an early onset leader, as on court performance has yet to be significantly affected by this.
Great rebounding, perfect for alley-oops and putbacks. Good jump, slightly speedier than the average bigfur. Stellar blocking, fitting of his aggro style. Size’s a concern, but we are sure he can pull off a Barrett and bulk up; he’s also young and a slight height increase isn't ruled out, Scandinavian background would sure help.
Isn't a known scorer, but has fair accuracy, struggles heavily with free throws and long-reach passing, needs to learn how to control strength. This makes him more propense to take a shot rather than pass to a relatively safer teammate. Is known to get in foul trouble when attitudes get very hot, is very reactive. Short college career, but really good notes from scouts here and overseas from some years ago.
Is the marbled polecat worth the risk? You might think twice at his bluntness and sheer strength, but a look of him on action on the court will sure make you want to bet all your chips on him.

A very honest and unique description if ever I saw one. I am curious as to what he originally studied in college, though that is just me. He seems like he is yearning for something that he cannot quite explain. I do see him having a clash with Alphonse Norwich at some point. It just seems that his sense of alpha male ego may cause a ruckus every now an again. Can't wait to see what develops.
