For all of you Nutella lovers out there, this is the ice cream for you. Not only does it combine the rich, chocolate-hazelnut flavor with vanilla bean ice cream, but the silky texture of the ice cream itself is comparable to that of chocolate mousse.
Ingredients:
1 Vanilla bean
2 1/2 Cups of heavy cream
1/2 Cup of milk
3/4 cup of sugar
6 Egg yolks
Nutella (I would say maybe 3/4 cup, but you can add Nutella to your liking)
First make a vanilla bean ice cream mixture. In a medium sauce pan, mix the cream, milk and sugar. Split the vanilla bean lengthwise, scoop out the pulp and add both the pulp and the bean to the mixture. Heat the mixture until the sugar dissolves. In a medium sized bowl, whisk the egg yolks. While whisking, add about one cup of the mixture to the eggs. Make sure you keep whisking because you don't want the hot mixture to cook the egg. Once that has been well mixed, combine that mixture with the rest of the cream mixture in the sauce pan. Heat over medium heat stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. Once the mixture gets thicker and sticks to be back of the spoon, its done. Remove and discard the vanilla bean. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature.
Once it has cooled to room temperature, pour it into a blender and add the Nutella. Blend it until its well mixed. Then refrigerate the mixture. It needs to be cold when you put in the ice cream maker. Once the mixture is thoroughly cooled, make the ice cream according to the manufacturer's instructions.

I will say, I use a vanilla bean ice cream as a base, but you could find a recipe that uses vanilla extract. I would just cut the measurement of vanilla extract in half. Vanilla beans are kind of expensive, but you can usually find them in the spice isle of a supermarket. It would be one bean in a jar.
