One more Godzilla to throw into the mix, this time a more villainous one.
Debuting in the 1994 movie "Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla", the title villain was unfortunately saddled with one of the more ridiculous and convoluted origin stories of the Godzilla Mythos.
Chief among them being the fact that he was spawned by a black hole, then a subsequent white hole (of course). How did this happen? Well apparently Godzilla cells managed to get sent out into space.
How do you ask? Well there are two possible sources, one being Biollante, who escaped into the coldness of space after her battle with Godzilla, (which WOULD explain the spikes along his mouth) the other being none other than Mothra, having acquired some on her person during her own battle with the Big G two movies ago, who also went into space at the end to perform a needed task.
Unfortunately these two theories are NEVER elaborated upon, and thus we're left with that big question. Well... besides how the hell did SpaceGodzilla escape a Black and White Hole in the first place? :P
Well regardless of where he came from, it was soon pretty clear where he was heading, that being Earth of course.
His first stop, upon finally reaching Earth, is to confront his brother/father, bringing in Godzilla's adopted son, Little Godzilla, into the battle in the process. Showing his evil side, the space monster soon imprisons the younger creature in a prison of crystals, and then heads off towards the city (of course). Pissed, Godzilla follows after him.
Upon hitting the city, (whose name escapes me right now) SpaceGodzilla begins to flood the city with more of his crystals, their origins, nor how he really creates them goes unexplained.
Godzilla, joining forces with Moguera, (who looks like a giant mechanical penguin with "joe cool" shades), manages to finally best his twisted doppelganger, who soon disappears in a style reminiscent of Biollante, giving further credit towards THAT origin theory.
Godzilla, having defeated another opponent, heads back home to his island, where Little Godzilla, freshly freed from his crystal prison, awaits.
For me, this movie is like the sore thumb of the 90's series. For a series that tried so hard to distance itself from the more campier trappings of the previous series, the Showa Era, this felt (to me) more at home in that time period than what was being thrown about in the 90's.
It's not that bad of a movie, just feels out of place in the series it finds itself in. Rumor has it that the idea was initially spawned during the time period between the Showa and Heisei eras, (where many ideas were thrown about by Toho, but never really got far till the 80's) so I guess it makes sense, in a weird sort've way.
Hope you like the picture. ^^
