Sneak Peek:
“Now, everyone remembers how to play right?” Skylar asked the group of kindergartners, skeptically. “Because if you don’t, I can go over it one mor-”
“We know how to play, Miss Skywar!” Lisped one of pups in the semi-circle around her. “It’s just ‘hide-and-go-seek.’” The rest of the children nodded eagerly, ready to start their afternoon game before their parents came by to pick them up for the day.
“Okay then, here it goes!” She announced before spinning on her heel and leaning her head against the tree behind her, her face hiding in the fold of her arms. “One. Two. Three…” Bouts of laughter and the sound of paws padding away on gravel alerted Skylar to the start of the game. They had agreed for her to count to the number “one-hundwed”, but now wasn’t the time to play by the rules. The sly fox slowly raised her head and peaked over her right shoulder. There, sitting on the same park bench, right under the same old magnolia tree, was him. Her fur bristled at the sight. Every Tuesday and Thursday, Skylar stood in as a student-teacher for the local elementary school’s kindergarten class. It was beyond her how he figured that out.
Her blue eyes focused in on the wolf’s profile as he stared off at a group of kits playing on the playground’s jungle gym. He had black fur, only a touch lighter than the hair on his head, and silver eyes that gleamed in the sunlight. Despite the sun being out, winter still had its grasp on the world, and he wore a bright red scarf and black trench coat to combat it. His posture was regal, as if he were of noble blood himself. Back straight, he surveyed the playground as if it was his domain. And only then, if all things seemed to be in order, he would slouch, one leg over the other and arms hanging loosely over the back of the bench. However, even in this appearance of ease, his ears would stand tall, ready to move in case one of the children got hurt.
Skylar’s face heated with anger. In a way, she felt as if she were the one being babysat, instead of the other way around. Mrs. Patterson had finally given her permission to watch the kids during recess by herself. Alone. She was the one the kids could rely on if they got into a squabble or skinned a knee. With that wolf sitting idly by, it felt as though he was the teacher and she was just another kindergartner playing “hide-and-go-seek”. A gust of wind blew through the air and Skylar gazed at a magnolia blossom that parted from its branch. The flower drifted slowly in the breeze before landing on said wolf’s head, right behind his ear. She snorted. Now that completed the picture. Giggling, she wondered how long the flower would be able to hold its position before floating off again.
The wolf’s ear flicked at the sound of her laughter and a steely eye caught her own. She swallowed, then noticed that her sly peeking at the wolf had turned into a full on stare, her back almost flush with the tree she had been leaning on. The wolf’s steely gaze softened as he smirked at fox’s flustered movements, and winked, letting out a gorgeous smile. Skylar paused, almost getting lost in his gaze before snorting again. With that flower still in his hair and that cheesy smile, it was almost too much to bear! Skylar held her stomach as she doubled over in laughter. His brow furrowed as the wolf followed her gaze and slowly raised his paw to his head. Shaking her head with a smile, Skylar turned around and rested her head on the tree to resume her counting. Serves him right to sit there like an idiot with a flower in his hair!
Skylar took a deep breath, and started to count where she had left off. She got to fifteen before the temptation to turn around got to her again. Sighing, she peeked over her shoulder again, and her face began to heat with something other than anger. The magnolia blossom lay unharmed beside him on the bench, but what got her was the most condescending look on the wolf’s face. When her gaze met his, mock disappointment was shown in his eyes and even then her ears still flattened with guilt. Then he slowly lifted a finger and waggled it, making what looked like a tutting sound as he clicked his tongue and shook his head. Skylar spun around and faced the tree again, her face heated in embarrassment. What was happening to her?! Why was this male getting under her skin? She shook her head, physically trying to shake off these unwanted feelings. Why was it that she was almost… excited, at the possibility of seeing him on her afternoons at the playground? They never spoke, it was always a game of cat and mouse, one prodding the other. But maybe today was the day to ask for his name?
