HaD: Groul the Dragonlord
Reptile – The Score
Volume VIII: “Heroes And Darkness”
Composed by Patrick Reichel
Track 14: “Groul the Dragonlord”
Outcast… dragon… king!
This is one of my most beloved themes… and it’s an original! I’ve composed this theme many years ago and it’s still one of my favourite themes. In addition, this is the character theme for the red anthro dragon warrior “Groul” who is also one of my most beloved characters. ^^
Finally, I was able to use some male and female choir in a way to make them sound less artificial and I’ve created a really… LOUD action track!
Enjoy!!!
Media Used:
ALESIS USB-Keyboard, YAMAHA PSR-1000-Keyboard, ABLETON LIVE 8.2, MIROSLAV Philharmonik, Microphone, ALESIS Equalizer and mixing console
Working Time:
About 9 hours
Inspired by and dedicated to:
James Horner
Composed and performed by Patrick Reichel aka
reptilecynrik
NOTES:
* My favourite part: starting at 1:41
EDIT
#1: Increase of the overall volume - it's alright to set your volume to 50% only!
#2: I've doubled all brass and string parts - making them stronger!
James Horner, born Aug. 14, 1953 in Los Angeles, died in a plane crash on June 22, 2015!
Rest in peace... I'll miss you and your great music!

Thanks a lot for the comment, my friend!
James Horner... yes, as a matter of fact his "STAR TREK II" score is supreme. He has used almost 90% of this score in ALL his other compositions, suchs as "ALIENS" or "AVATAR" or some other scores.
Though... "AVATAR" is more or less a crown jewel because it combines his old habits and some new ideas. So, THIS would mark the top of his career, I think. It is one of his very best scores in my opinion.

Now , I don't listen to this type of music but I assure you that my comment won't be bias at all (or I will it ?.. XD JK) anyways...
To me music is just music , there is no particular style of songs that I can't listen to. It's just good or bad music. And this falls in my good category.
I want you know that I fell in love with this piece @ the 1:40s.
As far as I'm concerned, it flowed nicely and I really enjoyed my listen .
It kinda made me think of going into battle .. Or a warrior training for battle.
Everything worked together here from the voices to the brass so I think it was blended kinda nicely.
Now on the speed change .. I would have punched the notes a little bit more and shorten how long the notes were being held by the voices... But remember, I don't compose music quite like this so what I would have done probably doesn't have that much weight to it XD..
I think the drums were pretty much on point during this piece , very nice sounding .
Well I hoped you enjoyed my terrible attempt at a useful comment

Hello and thanks for the useful comment! ^^
Well, any comment is appreciated... but people who take their time to write even MORE than the usual are even more appreciated.
I'm glad that I made it in your "Good" category... it was a 50/50 chance, after all! *joke*
This song was supposed to have some changes in speed but it wasn't easy. The previous versions of this theme are rather moderate... slow marching. In this case, I wanted some MORE force and speed. It's still something I need to work on.
^^
THANKS very much!

Welcome.. and changing the speed of a song can get rather complex.
Especially if it's odd timing or if the increase is not a even ratio..
Example
like going from 73 bpm to 100 bpm..(beats per minute)
Now you could go from 73 to 146 which would be less complicated .. BUT that might be too fast of a speed , then you have to worry about if that much of a tempo increase works with the song.
But anyway much

Not bad Not bad, but I feel that the beginning part needs more drums. I suggestion using African drum beats to create more of a fullness in the intro. In the transition from the slower part to the faster part, I suggest doing Decrescendo with small drum roll then crescendo with a cymbal roll to bring up that faster tempo. But Overall Not bad ^W^
Awesome to hear another piece from you! Glad to see you're still going strong <3 It's a wonderful piece!
My only suggestion has to do with the strings in the middle portion. You're going for a really strong sound but the strings have a weak attack. You could either change the sample you used for that portion or you could layer a different sample that has a strong attack to give you more of a punch to the strings. Same goes with the brass section as well. That should help really add to the aggressive style that you used in that portion!

Hello and THANK YOU for the comment. ^^ I was just (!) waiting for you to write something, hrhrhrhr... it means really much to me.
After all, you've taught me quite a huge deal about this.
As for the strings, it was ONLY ONE section of strings.... XD
I could double it... yeah, that's it.
You once told me to double some channels to get a stronger outcome.
Thank you.
NExt piece should be a rather calm one again... ^^ I'm trying to have a huge variety of songs on this current album.

I love it! the little changes made a great difference : D
Seriously man, this is amazing. I still remember the old version and how amazed I was with this. Definitly the new voices made an amazing touch ^ ^ It almost work as a music for some sort of trailer man! Congratulations!

Hehe, yeah... I compose music, as well.
Since "Original Filmmusic" is one of my other passions, I've started composing the same type of music... peew... 22 years ago!
XD
And I have no synthetic sounds here... these are recordings of real instruments.
Well... they are synthetic, somehow... after all, I didn't record an actual orchestra... though the sounds are real.
