yep, I couldn't work out where to tweak the main startup screen, all I could manage was the hibernation screen. Then a few days later I find the damn thing "repaired" itself back to the default one

Yeah Its a pain. You have to modify the ntoskrnl file with Reshacker. There are 3rd party programs that will allow you to change the bootscreen as well as the welcome screen where you login.
