While I do find the idea of a bunch of dumb jocks being forced to study hilarious, it does seem a bit cruel to punish them instead of the coach, since they were totally, undeniably innocent in this case. They didn't really do anything wrong except just be dumb jocks who happen to be coached by a person who honestly should not still have his job, and probably shouldn't have gotten it in the first place. Another problem is, if the coach was not caught in the act, he could've totally gotten away with it. He could've lied and said "The locker was open when I got here." and "I had reason to believe he was hiding drugs in there." Those two sentences could've believably gotten him out of trouble, if he hadn't been caught in the act. The word of a teacher is usually believed over a student's, especially if drugs are even mentioned. This makes the principal's sudden appearance just seem like it happened so the plot can start.
