SOOoooOOooooo
I found an AMAZING Livejournal post the other day while trying to figure out how to correctly pattern out and create HOLLOW digi padding with foam. Yes, it's possible, and it's usually how the mascot makers do it. I figured it was my best shot at having digi since it's the most breathable and flexible method that wouldn't get too hot.
Welp, I found a how-to on making to-scale costumes using tiny scale models and bringing the pattern off them up to the full size. A lightbulb clicked in my brain and I whipped out my old oil clay from college and GOT TO BIZNESS.
This will be my leg model I'll be patterning the foam off of! ISN'T IT BEAUTIMOUS???
Gonna do the pattern with polyfil first to make sure it works and then purchase the foam and go to town. I'm so excited. I thought I'd NEVER be able to get the proper shape for digi without a lot of guesswork but this has taken all the guessing out of it. I can sculpt like nobody's business, but never quite saw the use for it besides possibly making resin heads in the future. OH HOW WRONG I WAS.
