*hug* Poor dear... My father left our family when i was 7-8 and i barely rember him...
But i'm a martial arts fan (I do kickboxing instead of grappling styles, though) and wretling is the only not-news programs that i watch on itlaian TV - it's often more intelligent than most of them1-)

TKD isn't a good chocie for self-defence (I can expalin you the theory if you want) - I'd choose judo or any course of self-defemces for women (comunities sometimes run them for free, do a net-search!)
